Since there is very limited floor space for pedals and a place to put your feet I am going to try a hand clutch. IMG_3072.JPG

Yes Im hoping it will not be to hard to engage. I do need to get the clutch parts put together before I get to far on the brake pedal. Might have to put it on the floor.
Dont really want to end up with a Rat Fink Clutch handle sticking out of the car.

  8. image.jpg I put my brakes on a handle and the clutch on the floor...but I haven’t driven it yet.....

I was hoping it would be like a “Big Wheel!”

Well good news bad news. My radiator fits in the shell and I made a neat little recess for the rad cap but I have a fan and upper rad hose inlet that want to occupy the same space. IMG_3082.JPG IMG_3083.JPG .

Can you cut down the fan one of your fans questioned...:D

Perhaps in the center region to retain the air volume pushing qualities...of course all must be balanced as well but me thinks its all doable.

I have already cut the fan down. I talked with my buddy who is a great tig welder, the plan is to cut the inlet off, patch the hole and move the inlet to the top of the tank.

Smart move. Just like antique midgets and sprinters. Now you just need to run a pressurized fuel tank with the hand pump outside on the left side.

I,ve been kicking around ideas on how to extend my steering shaft off my 50 merc box. This is what I came up with. IMG_3098.JPG I have a piece of 35 Ford drive shaft left over from my exhaust pipe build so I cut off the small end, chucked it in the lathe and trued it up. IMG_3100.JPG I then cut the arm off the pitman arm and bolted the splined part back on the box, the big end of the drive shaft fits perfectly over the splined piece. The small end is big enough for a socket to pass thru so I can take the extension on and off. IMG_3101.JPG I have a few ideas on how to attach a pitman arm on the small end but I will think about it a bit more.

My motto for this build is use what you have. I figured the drive shaft was strong enough for a 85 horse flat head it should be strong enough for a steering arm.

My pops and I took his Roadster out to the Goodguys Pleasanton show, while there I cruzed the swap meet and found my gas tank. A WWII era bomber oxygen tank. IMG_3128.JPG

  19. I had to extend the steering shaft like you did on my ‘34 truck to get out past the hairpins. I just cut a new pitman arm out of 3/8” plate that had a hole for the tubing to pass through then I tig welded it all the way around. Welded on a replacement ball for the drag link and good to go!

Rocket, it's not my intention to tell you what to do, but it appears that you've tacked your pitman arm extension with the bare solid mig wire and welding it up with that wire that could be a big mistake. That wire has a 70,000 pound tensile strength, but it is not ductile (won't flex much without cracking).
I used it on a custom pitman arm when I grafted in a later model power steering gear on my 75 F250 4 x 4 in the late 80's. It worked fine for 3 or 4 years, but on one trip to the mountains with 5 guys in the crew cab and 5 snowmobiles on the trailer behind, we pulled into the the parking lot at our destination and while backing in to park the trailer my steering quit. A quick look showed that the pitman arm had broken in two through the middle of the weld, not against the parent metal and there was no porosity. From the rust marks in the crack it had been failing for some time.
Luckily there was a guy down the road a couple miles with a stick welding machine. I was able to cut away all the old weld and put it back together with 7018 and it's still working today. I inspect it carefully every time I change oil and after more than 25 years it's still crack free. We could have easily totaled the truck and snowmobiles and killed 5 guys that night. One of the luckiest days of my life.
I personally won't use that wire anymore for any job that has critical stresses. It's cheap and easy to run, but probably not a good choice for many jobs. I mostly use it for sheet metal and light nonstructural welding jobs now. I use Dual-Shield 7000 or it's equivalent for anything structural if I'm using mig. Even a small tack with the Dual-Shield is hard to break, you can tell the difference immediately.
Anyway, not my place to tell you what to use, just saying I will never use it again for an important weld. BTW, I really like your imagination and your creative ability.

The pitman extention will be tig welded. I just tacked it with the wirefeed.

I came up with a steering box mount. Since this is a use what you have build I used the rest of my 35/6 inner drive shaft to make an old school sprint car box. IMG_3182.JPG I cut off the last mounting tab and ruffed out the end of the box so it is round. IMG_3183.JPG I turned a chunk of alum. for a spacer for my drive shaft to fit on IMG_3181.JPG On the other end I built this plate so I could weld another chunk of drive shaft. IMG_3185.JPG IMG_3187.jpg And this is what it looks like. I need to cut it to length and build a few mounts off the frame.

    Good deal, much better.
Some guys used to mount the Schroeder steering gears in old connecting rods, might look okay in this backyard whatchagot style racer build. Small journal Chevy rods with inserts fit the 2 inch steering box tubes.

I built the frame mounts today after work for the steering box. I will throw a few gussets on for good measure. IMG_3188.JPG IMG_3189.JPG

  27. Thanks! It has worked well for the last 9 years the truck has been on the road. Your situation looked so similar I had to share! (I hope you don't mind?)

Dodge flat 6. Some inspiration, as if you needed any. But stumbled on this.
