Projects Jack stands that will go under the tires

I need to get my 55 sunliner up in the air to go over it for the Florida trip,since its a convertible it does flex alot and since I do not need to take the tires off I would like to put something under all four tires so I can open and shut the doors easily. So are there any stands available that can be put under the tires so the car can sit on the suspension and yes I can put stands under the suspension but can get in the way while working under the car.

 

Do you have a set of ramps? Or can you borrow a set from someone and buy a set for yourself if you don't already have a set? That way you can drive the car up on one set, then jack the other end up and place that end on the other set of ramps......Done!

 

Run it up on ramps in the front, jack stands under the axle in back. Don't skimp on quality of either.

.........Good idea, but I think he wants the car to sit on the tires.

 

You can even turn the ramps around on one end (the end you jack up) so they aren't in your way when under the car.

Be careful if you use ramps front and rear, point them in opposite directions so the car CAN'T roll off of them.

 

Don't know how high you need it but many moons ago us money poor teenagers used spare tires....made pulling tranny's/clutches etc. much easier.

 

The do make some ramps that you can remove the ramp part to just have a stand under the tire.
20 bucks or so worth of lumber would make some solid stands too. You could make them what ever height you wanted within reason.

I like this idea and looks like time to make some.

 

The problem with stands under the tires is jacking the car high enough to make it worth while. It can take some finagling using standard garage fair floor jacks with a rise of 18-20 inches or so. Be careful. It's the reason I suggested the stands under the axle in back....

I kept four rims for this.

 

I'm going to build some of these to go with my 2 post lift. No problem in jacking it up and gives a great way to work on the car with the suspension loaded. Exhaust system and suspension development come to mind.

What length of boards do you recommend? Looks like about 16".

 

I think I am going to look for four junk deep offset rims to use as stands for now until I can make some out of wood,if I can get it up 8 to 10 inches it will be enough for me to slide under it.

I put the front on ramps, and the rear axle is supported by jackstands. Suspension is loaded that way, no flexing.
High enough to R/R transmission. (From experience)

 

You could always build something like I did from 3/16” steel plate.
12” high,they work really well.

Something is fishy if the frame flexes that much ! I worked at the FoMoCo frame plant for years. Convertible frames are more stout than sedans or hardtops.

 

Love the "correct V8" on the light bar....
I use some 6x8x18" cut cribbing blocks I left my last job with.

 

These or similar would really come in handy for checking rear-end pinion angle -- to get the car level with all weight on the wheels.

It flexes enough that the doors will not open right if jacked up on one side so when on stands I try to keep it even,if a the tires do not have to come off I want to put something under each tire if possible.

 

Not sure I'd do that with soft pine from the local Home Depot, I'd trust them more if made with hard wood. Some pallets are hardwood, might be a better source of material if you can find them.

 

I think the way Mr48 Chevy design it, soft wood should be strong enough, BUT, for added strength a layer of 7/16 plywood could be installed under the top boards. This would give some insurance.
That pallet wood is often very hard to work with and is sometimes dimensionaly challenged. Ask me how I know! Lol
