crestlinerskirts.jpg I love these cars. The 49 was a radical change from the Fords of the 40s and came to market with lots of problems. Squeaks, rattles, etc. It was so bad that the 1950 model was advertised as 'Improved in 50 Ways'. You may benefit by looking at a 50 and adding those improvements. Heres my 50

Anyone have recommendation on where to get a water pump rebuilt?

I’d suggest you replace flathead water pumps.
Buy the ones with improved impellers for higher volume and bearings.

I have H6 flathead, I don't think anyone makes a new version. Stuck getting this one repaired.

Kellogg automotive sells bearings and seals for about every pump. If it is worn a lot there may be a tiny bit of machining necessary and a press to disassemble/reassemble.

  9. I improved my 49 coupe with 350 cu in of chevy smallblock power. Mine was originally a flathead 6 like yours. Guy at work took the good-running 6 banger for a project he had.

If I can't get the flat head running, I will most likely go the same direction as you with a modern small block.

My uncle was the head mechanic at the local Ford dealer when the new 49s came out. He was a died in the wool Ford man but he always told how many problems they had with the 49 cars. Job security he called them:rolleyes:

One of the biggest problems with '49's doors flew open on turns,
One lady, in our town lost one of her twin girls, a 4 year old, when door flew open, kid slid across pavement , hit curb head first..:(

In those days of fewer lawyers, NOBODY sued much. let alone sue the Ford Motor Company..

The flathead 6 is pretty much an orphan motor at this point, there are little to no parts available to rebuild or maintain them. Once I figured that out, I stuck a 302/AOD in my '51. If you want to stay flattie, go with a v-8; parts are still being made and it will bolt directly to your OD transmission. Going to expensive, though.
Nice car, BTW, I hope you plan to leave the original paint on it- it is too nice to change!

Yep thought the same, not a coupe. Here's a 49 coupe I had back in my younger days. You can see no wing vent in rear window.

I know it's not a coupe, don't know how to change the thread title.

Concur she's an orphan, probably won't keep the engine and transmission. But I still want to get it running. After 19 years sitting it seems right.

  29. That floor is actually in pretty good shape. Must have come from eastern Oregon! I dragged my ‘50 down from western Oregon and had to replace the floor (and the braces) from the toeboards to the trunk. A job I don’t want to do again.
