Projects Jack stands that will go under the tires

If you're a country boy, get the used discs from a harrow, weld a 3-inch steel pipe nipple between them (turned outside to outside). I have two and can make more.

 

My 55 is the same, not horrible but enough to let you know that it is flexing some.

 

I found four junk rims behind the garage,cut some wood for the tires to sit on and its up in the air and probably will not scrap the rims now.

 

here you go. my bases are 12 inches high. 3/16 inch steel.

 

Scrap lumber. PT 4x4's standing on end, PT 2x12 on top and 1/2" OSB to tie it together.

 

When you guys use 2X4,s to build the platforms to set under your tires, how long do you cut your 2X4's? What is the width and length of the finished platform? I really like that idea and I can make the height to work with my working conditions. Thanks for your help.

 

I am going to make some this winter but the rims will do for now.

 

Have used old semi truck brake drums, the hole in the middle captures the tire pretty good, usually can be found for scrap price or free to haul them away. Down side heavy and hard to store. Can weld some stops on if your tires dont fit so you are comfy with the wont roll off, usually 11-12" tall.

 

What length do you cut your 2X4's to make these stands ??

Tire stands

 

I made these for use in conjunction with my 2 post lift for when I need to load suspension. They are a combination of vertical 2x4 material with a 2x4 ring under the bearing surfaces, 2 layers of osb at the bearing surfaces, and osb at all 4 sides for lateral stiffening. I ran the calculations on the dimensional lumber without the stiffeners, and one box would support over twice the car's weight easily before the osb was added. 4 boxes give a safety factor of several times what is needed.

The whole shooting match was made from 2 sheets of osb and about 10-2x4s and several tubes of construction adhesive. Glued and screwed. The boxes are just tall enough that I can sit on my butt under most of the car and work.

 

Thinking of making some that will bolt in place of the wheels to do body work,I will make both this winter or a set that can do both.

 

Not high enough, not even close.

 

I used to have a pair of those, I think they came with a Kar Grabber frame pulling setup I had. 3 pieces of angle iron, the uprights were bent to clear hubs, and the bottom piece was straight. All bolted construction to allow them to fit different vehicles.

 

Mine ended up 18 1/2” wide x 20” long and get the car an extra 10” off the ground. Perfect to roll around on a creeper under the car.



I put a cheap set of castors on the top of one so I can turn it upside down, stack the others on top, and roll them into the corner when I don’t need them.

Good idea -- jack stands always seem to occupy too much space and get in the way.
