I'm building a 41 Ford pickup with Firestone wide whitewalls, 750-16 rears and 550-16 fronts. I plan on using the spare tire rack on the side of the bed. What size would you run? What would look best? What came stock? Thanks, Rich
Hi. What size? One that will work for either if you have to use it. Two more thoughts on this - You might consider getting a second bed rack for the other side and have one of each size OR use bed mount for one and adapt an under bed mount for second spare. If you wanted the under bed spare to not show it would be easy to install a panel side to side below tailgate to shield it from view from the rear. Just food for thought. Jimmie
I have 215/75-15 radials up front, 235/75-15 out back. I went with the smaller tire for the spare, the fronts will wear more than the rear (normal driving..) and I can rotate the spare in with the fronts.
If it has big & littles, use the little.....to limp it to the closest garage, hopefully for a fix. Big might not fit inside the front fender. The little would look better in the spare tire rack too!
You want to make sure it fits in the dimple and doesn't stick out past the cab corner. I've seen too big of tire look out of place on the side of the truck. Glad you are going wit the spare, it looks right on the majority of these rigs.
I dig this truck, and it's running 7.00-16 and 5.50-16. Don't know what the spare is, but it looks pretty close to the front....
That's what I was talking about above. I don't think that rear tire on that truck will fit in the dimple on the fender. The small one looks right at home though. Damn that truck sits nice.
A spare the same height as rear tire in case you ever have to use it. If my model i built decades ago is any indication there’s no dimple in fender
If its posi tracton Run a tire the same height as the rear other wise on big deal think about the donut spairs.
If possible, I would carry a spare the same diameter as the rear, as mentioned above, open diff or posi.
I would find a tire with the same diameter as the rear tires. That way you will not screw up a post rear end, or the diferential with different diameter tires on the same axle. Just make sure the spare will fit and turn on the front also.
