I used a 12v htr from an old Massey grain combine, 7" hi 7" wide 7" deep, covered the housing with a stainless engine turned cover. These are cheap to buy here in the midwest & very easy to find. Greg
I have this thing laying around here someplace. I bought it at a swap. it came with a modern blower motor, but the shaft size it too big for the fans. The original motor is still there, but it has bare wires. I suspect coming up with a blower motor wouldn't be that hard. I put a little air pressure in he core and held it under water, with no air bubbles. Has lots of doors that open or close and has an outlet for defroster hoses. I'll throw in the heat valve, it may or may not be good. The control switch shown is no longer available. It didn't fit in the area it needed to go in so I came up with a different plan. I will not be using it, sure would like to find it a good home. Gene
Hey! I got a couple of those that you have also. Neato! I like your collection. [emoji4] Sent from my Moto Z (2) using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I have one out of a 54 dodge truck here that needs an overhaul but should still be able to be resurrected..... PM me if you are interested....
Now for the not-yet-pretty. This is what was in my '36 truck when I got it. I like the simple looks of it and plan to put it back into use.
That'll look great when all restored. gotta ask...what's that tail-light looking thing above it? and, the hooded thingy above that one?
The tail-light looking thing is a removable ash tray with a sliding top. The hooded thing above that was a small light.
Read somewhere to look for square or rectangular heaters.....as the round ones are hard to repair/replace the core.
That makes sense. I haven't started pulling it apart yet but I assume I could look for a smaller square core that would fit or just retrofit an electric element if it comes to that.
IIRC, I posted on another thread that I used a heater out of a school bus....the kind that fits under the seat(s) for the cab on my off topic JD lawn tractor. Nice small size with 12v fan motor. Had to do some extensive mods to it to get the inlet/outlet in the right orientation. Attached an expanded-metal grill on top There's also a 1 1/4" flexible duct to the left side.
I tried to find the ebay purchase and couldn't find it..sorry.. It was a 60's 70's Ford truck I think...the real determiner it the size square you are going to fill. I measured the old core and searched the heater core listings until I found one close to my dimensions...and cheap..then I made it fit with some trimming and foam to tighten things up. My fan was good but a 6v so I got a 12v convertor to change the volts...took some investigating one Sunday morning but worth it in the end. good luck if you go after it.
My A has a ‘37 Olds Harrison heater box. FDE1B658-5B03-4990-8D0D-4A5B6E7688FB by Russ B posted Nov 6, 2018 at 12:56 PM It hides a Vintage Air heater sitting up high under the dash. It is painted body color and is not immediately noticed.
I prefer to go vintage as well, and love the Art Deco era heaters. This one went in my AV8 Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Has anyone gutted a Southwind and converted it to hot water heat? I have a nice Southwind in my Forty, and have been thinking about trying it, especially since they don't seem to bring all that much if I put it up for sale anyway. And I really like that it sort of mimics the shape of the hood on the car, when seen from the front.
I'm going to be using this outboard cowl for a D.Y.I. heater shell. The plan is to make it all purdy with round metal vents and knobs as needed.
I'm still slowly putting the bits and pieces together so it all in a state of flux. One thing influences and changes what I'll do with the next. My project is a '52 Chevy panel truck and I'm really liking the Art Deco style of the dash. I'm keeping that look and style but will be playing it up a little more with a few added details.
Napa has a 12V motor that's a direct replacement for several early Ford heaters. I have the part# written down in my desk at the shop. I'll try to remember to come back to this and list it.
Took an old Tropic-Aire powder coated the case and fitted it with a new heater core, water flow valve, and a big computer fan with a speed control. Knobs missing the picture are black. Didn't get a chance to use it yet.
Trying to decide which of the following teo heaters will go in my '36 3w. The "Heat Rite" (1st pic) is a little smaller and would tuck in nicely, but the "Excel" (2nd pic) is more the Art Deco look I like. Whadda ya think ? Heat Rite Heater by TagMan, on Flickr Excel heater by TagMan, on Flickr
https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/members/ken-partch.152794/ Whatever happened to Ken Partch? He refurbished some kick ass heaters.
I have found that big truck dash fans work , three speeds and the fan blade is a lot like the antique heaters run . I have extras if anyone wants one .
