Vintage shots from days gone by!

I hope this photo is not considered "off topic" [The cars are NZ built]

On the left [of the photo] is a very young Rod Millen.

Rod later moved to the USA to start a successful racing career there [Pikes peak ,IMSA, Baja champion etc]

 

Back then, if a Hotrod club was organized they could approach the NZ Govt for some assistance [youth culture blah blah!]
The NZ Army had an Army base at Waiouru with a Military Airstrip. They kindly lent the airstrip for a drag racing meeting.

Another photo of Curly West's 270 GMC powered Willys gasser
Curly later replaced the Willys body with a T Bucket body, and stored the rare Willys body behind his shed.
He later had a rubbish remover come collect some junk off his section, and the rubbish guy crushed the Willys body, thinking it was junk!

A sad ending that happened to many old race cars.

 

Every time this picture gets posted, I wonder where these cars are now, especially the first one with the white top.

This truck is still around, and back with the original builder. Micky Himsl, Art Himsl's brother. Art's fairly well known.

 

Be careful man, don't get your fingers meshed up in there ....
