i found this photo on the net. he wanted more of a custom than a hot rod. probably wouldn't work with an A but the process of prebuilding it would. 547296_17703365_1937_Studebaker_Woody.jpg
this started out as a four door. everything from the cowl back, of the body, was made. the rear fenders started as the the originals.

    Scott,
Sounds like a great idea and a fun project! I like the A woodie with the door curved to match the cowl. I'm redoing my '32 woodie, and I'd like to redo the front doors to match the curve of the cowl. I like '33-'34 woodies because of how the cowl flows into the wood body. Your project will be challenging, but you don't see a lot of woodies around, especially hot rods.

I like the way the wood curves with the cowl on the A as well. It looks challenging to get it right, but I had never noticed how the front corners of the 'factory' woodies are vertical and don't match the cowl curves. I think this would bug me in the long term and it would be worth the effort to shape them to include a transition from the cowl curve to almost vertical at the rear of the front doors.

    Hi Scott
I always wanted to build a " A" woodie, the one thing that I thought I would do is to lay the windshield back a little to soften up the lines in the body, Just a thought.

  9. Thanks for your post. If you have to farm out the wood work that's sounds very reasonable. This { Wood} be a nice way to build a great Woodie Wagon.

if you build it yourself a band saw, belt sander and table saw will be the three tools you will use most.
when the cabinet maker built that studebaker above, he did it in his home garage and those were the only pieces of equipment he used.

There's going to be a lot of sketching and photoshopping before I get anywhere near the woodwork, (I don't even have a frame/metalwork/running gear yet), so all (polite!) suggestions are welcome. Everyone has different take on how something should be done.

Here's a real standalone...I love it...;)...A Woodie that has great potential for an interesting Hotrod quite frankly pretty much as is with an AV8 or a Hopped up Banger...

For Sale a ways back its really just an admiration and an inspiration at this point...who knows maybe it's still around
the ad link is not the original...I posted a year or so ago...

It would look fantastic cruising through the Hills of Green dotted with Castles over your way...check out the link below...

    go for it !
I tell guys all the time that if they find a full hight model A cowl with good floorboard extensions to buy it …
don't sleep on a cowl with the posts cut / [Duval]...
    they store pretty well...
with the bead roller skills I have seen here I have no doubt that a roadster pick up or even a UTE could be built..... stash one for the kids... grandkids ?

That's been for sale locally for quite some time, it may still be. Good price too. I've thought about picking it up, but I've got no place to park it.

Here's something I photoshopped as an exercise. Basically everything from the door jamb back is wood.

That is a really neat looking vintage Hop-up Jalopy...I am surprised to see another ad on it which I think was 2017.

It looks chopped too. I'd like to know the story on it. Perhaps it was putting around the pits at El Mirage back in the day.

Here's what I'm working on, maybe someday I'll be ready to start putting wood on it.

  30. This is a great idea. The doors would be by far the hardest part to make but if you built it like this you’d be light years ahead. I probably have enough wood working skills to build one from the doors back.

I’d like to find an old cowl and doors and do something like this some day.
