Customs I finished my Mysterion clone and have a book contract!

  1. Again thanks so much for your comments. You TOTALLY made my day! I always believed there were guys out there who loved Roth and especially this wonderful car as much as I did. You confirmed that. Incidentally, once you finish the book if you would be so kind to post a review @ Amazon. Publisher says those are beneficial.

  2. Sotheby's gives auction participants a free copy of the event promotional book. High quality publication and costs $85! Here are a couple snapshots of the promo card insert that came with the book! I'm in there wrestling with the $MM type cars.

  3. Took it to Petersen Museum yesterday. Here it is, ready for the auction!

  6. You know, at this point the money will probably be inconsequential. You have achieved a goal, written about it so history is recorded and a few people will absolutely understand. I believe you are about to get your "15 minutes of fame" Best wishes. :)

Happy to see you there...I saw a shot of the snow-covered hills on the Grapevine...road looked clear.

  8. WFO; pretty much where I am at. Wife can't understand how I could sell it after spending 3 yrs of my life on it. Bucket list thing was to build it, don't mind selling it now. Although it would be nice to get a few shekels to boost up my retirement account!

Tom; Drove it down Thursday and GPS took me thru Mojave, 'cause they shut down I5. Tehachapi was almost snowed but road was clear. ALL I5 was detoured that direction so I spent about a third of the trip @ <20mph. BIG rain flurries. Took an hour and a half longer than it should have! Got to go home 405/I5 with not much traffic & no snow.

If you could get them to lower the reserve to like 300 bucks, least I could make a bid:)

    Beautiful work you've done!

Jeff, it went for nearly double the "pre-sale estimate". Isn't that incredibly impressive and I would say, quite unusual in the auction Biz? By comparison, the Ferrari fell 2 Mil short! Sotheby's did not know what they were dealing with!!

And you didn't even have to pay the extra for the reserve status. Hahahah!! Well-played, amateur!

  18. I am totally nonplussed! Way more than I hoped for. But it really helped that the auction was held a couple miles from Ed’s home and that a ton of Ed’s & Von Dutch art work preceded it. I sensed something good would happen when my car was there among the $$$$$$$$ cars but it gathered the crowds. All the Sotheby’s staff I met said it was by far their favorite car. And I don’t discount you fantastic endorsement that I am convinced carried a tin of weight.

    Beautiful reincarnation.

Curious to know more about the sale. Is there a print or video link anywhere?

  20. I joked above that I would be happy with 1% of what the $22,000,000 Fararri got and it turns out that is exactly what l got! Whodathunkit?!

Well, I think that the quality workmanship and attention to detail is what really impressed the bidders! But what do I know, I'm just happy for you and this is all well-deserved, in my humble opinion.

I wasn't at the auction and Sotheby's wouldn't tell me for security reasons. I did find out it was a 'reputable bidder' from Michigan. I gave him my contact info because there is a lot if stuff he needs to know.

A fitting end to your fine job on this build. The original .... in it's glory years.

  27. Jeff: no words can be said to adequately compliment you on your project. So I'll just use punctuation:
    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Question:
Any thought to selling/offering/marketing the detailed measurements or molds used to make your Mysterion clone? I know most couldn't approach the complexity/man-hours of a dual FE engined -mega chromed beauty, but the fluid, asymmetrical sculpted fiberglass body could bring a lot of joy to a lot of rodders out there!

  28. Actually I sold the body molds with the car! I had thought about keeping them and making them to sell but I think that market would be a bit small!! As far as the dimensions, you can do what I did and measure the Revell model and X25. Then it's a matter of massaging the pattern by hand to correct the Revell errors that were not as mis-dimensional as they were just mis-shaped.

  29. She was a wreck on auction day. Broke down in tears when she heard the price. She is pretty happy espectially in view of the great cars that didn't sell at the auction and because we weren't allowed to list a reserve price so were at the mercy of the bidders.
