Hot Rods How to afford an older station wagon?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Bruce Fischer, Jan 12, 2019.

  1. Thanks Mikey. I had surgery on the left ankle a few years back and it failed after only 6 months had to go back because a screw poped out of the side of the ankle{Drs fault} Then had one more and it didn't heal right either. Thats what wiped out most of my $$$. We are still living O.K. on the mountain top and with this new job I think I will be able to find something. I just was asking advice. Thanks as always. Bruce. 2. Seven hills. I had a newer rambler station wagon and got it up and running as most of my projects have been sitting a while. I drove it for about a year and sold it.I liked it. Bruce.

  3. Johnny, that's why I want an older station wagon again. Now a days every time some thing goes wrong with a new car or truck there is a recall on them or you have to take them back to the dealer for work. Thanks Bruce.

This 57 Ford wagon showed up on the Local FB marketplace this past week. A bit strange with the Chevy dash though. 6500 57 Ford Ranch Wagon Dash.jpg 57 Ford ranch wagon.jpg

All I was trying to say is this. People of your age and mine on average have the means to obtain loans at very low rates or near to zero. Let discipline be ones friend.

Well Bruce good luck and I'm sure will find something you can get into. I'm retired, soon to be 61, have two pensions plus gas and oil holdings with thee only debt being a new 33' travel trailer payment. We also have rental properties and make no real income from them after constant repairs and taxes, new roof on the one this last spring. I still watch my "hobby" and do not let myself overspend my imposed allowance. This Summer we are going on our first cruise, two weeks in Alaska and probably our last but it has been booked for two years and payments made so it isn't a real unexpected expense. I am biding my time to buy a new wiring harness for my 51 shoe box and then, tires, then interior, and finally new chrome bumpers, they are painted silver for now. Watch your money, only you can do that, sell some unused items, pinch where you can and you can achieve your goal. Welcome back, we missed you around here.

I like wagons too, they are hard to come by in decent shape up north. The floor on my '65 Belair wagon was shot otherwise the car was in good shape. Just have to set up some searches on local CL and eBay listings.

I have a 57 Country Sedan that has been on the back burner - parts ac***ulation for a while.
I get the fascination. I'll keep my eyes out in Tucson for ya. If you find one here I'll be glad to go look.
For you, I'll even be a little more critical so you don't get the kind of junk I drag home.

Hopefully the foot will heal fast. You could just sell the wagon you have, (that was the plan was it not?). Then do what you've been doing, find one that don't need as much resto work and fix it. Or take the proceeds and get a small loan and find something nicer. Only you can decide what what you can and/or want to do in the situation your in. Whatever you decide we're all here for you. Good luck with you're decision. PS: hopefully the foot heals fast, [emoji41]

Hey Bruce....Here's how I got my 55 wagon: I was able to do some horse trading to swap my cherry but undesirable 36 ford hump back body for a very desirable but raggedy 50 chevy delivery with no ***le. I spent more time than money to get a ***le, replace the rusted panels and put a small block/4 speed in it over a period of time as money allowed and blew a coat of epoxy primer on it...scored some J.A.Pan look-alike American wheels for it and drove it out to the west coast. This guy saw it and having a pinstriping business, he needed a delivery to put his logo on.
We swapped straight across. His car was a 55 Pontiac wagon he spend mucho money and time on...everything new including paint, interior, etc etc. All from a bare 36 ford sedan body on a frame.
My advise? Buy a raggedy desireable car and fix it up...trade it for what you want. deliveryN48chev.jpg 55wagon2.jpg

Yep, while delivering parts, keep your eyes open. Talk to all the shops you're delivering to. The mechanics may know of a Wagon project, such as one belonging to a long time customer, maybe one they used to do work on before it got parked.
As suggested, save up, plus the $$$ brought from the sale of your existing Wagon. Everyone's suggestion of selling off extra parts, etc is a good one.

    I'll preach my usual here when someone is trying to fund something;
you'll save $$$ a lot faster if you spend less $$$.
    • Do all your own work around the house. Don't hire anything out that you can do yourself.
    • Treat yourself but don't splurge regularly. Dining out, etc can get expensive. You'd be surprised how quickly all the lunches, $5 coffee's and ice creams add up. Brown bag it. $15 a day on lunch 5x a week is $300 a month in your pocket.
