Vintage shots from days gone by!

This photo brings back some memories. These were not the typical "steet cars" that were used all through Los Angeles.


This is what the "street cars" looked like when I was a kid. The bigger ones like the ones above and below were Pacific Electics "Big Red Cars"

The "Big Red Cars" were used to reach the out lying areas in and around Los Angeles, like Long Beach or to get to San Pedro Harbor, to board the steamer to Catalina Issland.

Eventually, the Big Red Cars and the street cars disappeared and were scrapped.

From my youth I remember an episode of the black and white television series "Rescue 8" in which the plot was people climbing all over this great pile of Red Cars and finally a stack of them toppled over. That was a really powerful and dramatic sight to see. I believe the episode is over on YouTube.

 

I remember the old green/yellow/white ones ran thru Inglewood. I believe after they were scrapped, they piled like this in Gardena and you could see them alongside Artesia Avenue right about where it went thru the middle of old Carrol Speedway.

 

I heard GM wanted people in buses or cars....not on electric street cars.

That's part of it. The big killer of it all was the whole system was already in disrepair prior to WWII. The war gave it new life because the Government knew that most of the work force needing to get to work to build the needs to go to war needed a means of transportation.

 

When this one appeared last week I thought I had seen it before but couldn't recall where.
