@K13 I think you missed it completely. The first thing that stands out is stance. The second is that all the hubcaps and wheels are different and not repeated. Not to many cars ran the same kind, like the repops are on every car build today. And as far as build style, every car was different in there own way. no build style was more prevalent than another. They didn`t use just Desoto bumpers and 54 Chevy grilles. For instance, look at the layout of the louvers. Seems like every car back then had a different pattern.

 

You are not looking at very many new customs if you think they are all using the same bumpers and grills and I could probably find pictures of 100 customs from back in the day that ran Cadillac Sombreros so the every car had different hubcaps thing doesn't fly either. This conversation is meaningless with out a time frame reference. There is a lot of variation in cars being built today if you take the time to look they just tend to be from an earlier style period up to the mid '50 where even back in the day the variation was more limited. You don't see as many wild customs from the late 50's being built but I would guess it's because fewer people find them as aesthetically pleasing. I know I sure don't.

I guess you summed it up right there. Most people hate some of the 1950`s build styles. And they do make there opinions heard. As radical and off the wall of some of the builds were. They just don`t fit the style of todays build. They just call them ugly, I call it experimentation.

 

I don't dislike them just like the earlier stuff better. There are some super cool later customs and some ugly ones as well. Lol. I think guys also build with resale in mind these days. When you are spending the type of money it costs to build a custom they are less likely to go outside the box that will appeal to the most people. It's kind of a shame but I do think it makes the few that do do it stand out even more which is cool.

These are both great points. Paint chemicals and pigments are chemically much different now and I truly believe some colors from that era can never truly be replicated today.

Film stock/quality has changed so much. Kodachrome is considered one of the most realistic films ever created because the developing process reproduced "true" color unlike any other...but at the same time there are some subtle differences that make the image naturally appealing to our eye. Its lucky that so much of our history was captured on it. (no wonder we're so nostalgic for that era?). When we look at these old photos, we're literally looking at a different version of reality.

On top of that, camera technology has changed. Lenses have changed. We now have digital image processors that give a computer "thinks" what things should look like. Lighting has changed...Sometimes I think even sunlight has changed over the years
