If I am not mistaken the large guy in the 3 piece suit is H. Rowe Bartle, the mayor of Kansas City, MO, from 1956 to 1963.

Memphis Tn fire department did the same thing. This was originally horse drawn , built in 1891, motorized in 1914 and modernized in this configuration in 1934. I did the gold leaf work on the restoration back in the nineties. It is in the Memphis Fire museum. It was in service up until sometime in the seventies. I can't tell if this is the original or the restoration but it looks to be parked in front of the last station it served at. BTW, the boom was raised by means of a sodium pellet dropped into a water filled cylinder. fire truck.jpg

I've been to that museum in Memphis and seen that rig up close. It's a great museum and that water tower is the main attraction. In fact, I'm going to Memphis next Sunday, going on a cruise down the Mississippi River on the "American Queen", down to New Orleans. My wife has never been to Memphis, she is gonna love Beal St. The river is running pretty high right now, I hope the Paddle Wheeler can make it under the bridges...

The chubby guy on the right is Henry J. Kaiser. When I was in High School, during the summer, I worked for him at his home in Lake Tahoe.

Thanks George for your detailed response. Great slice of history which is not too widely known, I think.

That eight man crew was probably a two piece company, pumper and hose wagon. Oops, GK beat me to it. George, did you work LAFD?
