I've seen the bright lights of Memphis
    And the Commodore Hotel
And underneath a street lamp, I met a southern belle
Oh she took me to the river, where she cast her spell
And in that southern moonlight, she sang this song so well

If you'll be my Dixie chicken I'll be your Tennessee lamb
And we can walk together down in Dixieland
    Down in Dixieland

I live in Monrovia, CA, an incorporated (1887) city in Los Angeles County. As you can see, the City of Monrovia also has state of art fire equipment. Well, it was state of the art in 1906 (Teddy Roosevelt was President) when they purhased this piece.

    Seagrave.jpg
In 1917, this beautiful Seagrave was purchased. I have to say, in the early days of America, being in the Fire Insurance business was not that great of an idea. Most structure fires left only the foundation of the building standing. Firemen across the nation did their best with what they had to work with, but about the best to hope for was trying to protect the neighboring homes from the one that was burning. The smaller communities did not have enough equipment or manpower, and the next closest community was 20 miles away. It was not out of the ordinary for entire blocks of buildings to burn down, usually cutting deeply into the communite's business tax base. Smaller communites had to ban together with mutual aid pacts. These worked pretty well, with City A calling for help from City B and City C, etc. The city of Monrovia is in a pact with 11 other incorporated communities, including Los Angeles County. The Cities of Pasadena, Glendale, Burbank, Sierra Madre, Montebello, Monterey Park, Alhambra, San Gabriel, South Pasadena, San Marino, Arcadia, and Monrovia are in a Fire Pact that is muich more than a mutual aid pact. These communities are one big bordeless fire department, with one fire dispatch system. A large fire in one community brings support from any or all the other fire departments, AUTOMATICALLY. The chief does not have to call, they are automatically dispatched by the single dispatch system. All these communities are on the same dispatch and fire ground frequencies. This is 44 fire stations. The name of this pact is called "Verdugo", the name of the street in Glendale where the dispatch team is housed. My place in Monrovia is actually closer to a fire station in Arcadia (by about a 1/4 mile) than the closest station in Monrovia. First in to my place is Arcadia, even though I don't live in that community. Verdugo dispatch does not go by borders, there are no borders between these communities when it comes to fire departments. Pretty neat, and it absolutley drives down the cost of fire insurance in all of these communites.
