st. louis had a worse problem caused by soft coal. street lights were left on 24/7. raymond tucker oversaw a commission that ended the problem. he later became mayor.

  16. There were two kinds of trailer axles, and one bolted spindle type was suitable for long term use for trailers, while the other one with the welded spindles was only approved for limited use.
I sold a pair of the former, approved type axles with new electric brakes recently, and had to check the regulations to make certain that I was selling the right axle for the correct application.
Even the tires on the roadworthy axles are different. I don't know if the roadworthy type of axle is still being manufactured.

Rambler bolt on spindles were so popular for trailers they became nonexistent in the wrecking yards many years ago.

  19. I remember this ride as a kid and, one time the bottom didn't come back up. As it slowed down the heavier people started dropping off first. Than started rolling all over the place! lol[IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

Long before that was introduced taking a pair of coveralls, or even pants and a shirt and soaking them in a borax solution which acted as a fire retardant was all they had. Not flame proof, it just slowed down the advancing flames.
It has been said that Fireball Roberts asthma symptoms were worsened by the borax and as a result he did not use that method.

  26. The one in front would have been a LOT taller with the wheels and tires on. Now at least they are at the same level....
