Hot Rods Selecting rims and where to buy them from?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by testdepth, Mar 26, 2019.

  1. Atwater Mike is correct. And, the guy at Chuy's Tire Town who installed them, he quit when when all these guys came looking for rim jobs.

Apparently the difference between wheel and rim is where you grew up or whether you are a purest engineer or just a guy that loves hotrods and turns his own wrenches. In high school back in the early 80's When I bought my first set of US MAGs for my 69 Chevelle from my buddy that owned a 68 Chevelle, I bought his "rims". Where I grew up wheels were hot wheels or on big wheels.

  3. Depends on what part of the country you live, Here in the South I have heard the term rims & tires since I was a kid, then along came mags, I never heard chrome wheels, it was chrome rims. HRP

  4. Funny thing is, I really don't mind the design all that much. For some strange reason, I think they look okay on a
    fenderless 32 roadster.
It's really just the fad thing . Nothing says poseur like modern wheels on a jacked up, supposedly 60's style gasser.
Maybe this belongs in the pet peeve thread ??;)

Don't say that! I have an 8x20 shed sitting on slot mags. Cheaper than pier blocks.
That's my philosophy too, never bought a new wheel, and I got a bunch. However, some who live in more rural areas probably don't have access to the abundance of used car parts we do.

Way too much time here wasted on terminology-wheels vs rims, motor vs engine, Ginger vs Maryanne (okay, that one is worth discussing). We should be reviewing design options instead.

"As a tree throws shade on the grass under it inhibiting its growth, throwing shade on someone is being negative to their idea or attitude" I am too old to think this is a cool phrase.

I think you meant "Ginger and Maryann".

Some things might be worth arguing about, others, not so much.

For what its worth, when I was in HS in the late '60's chrome wheels on the rear with American 5 spokes on the front were a popular combination at least in my neck of the woods.

Old School to me would be plain black reversed rims...
Would look wicked on your truck, which by the way already looks wicked.. I like it.

Good looking truck. I take it you bought it with the wheels that its sitting on.

Depends on what era youre trying to hit -if it matters to you, it does matter here for era correct. The wheels you have will run down the strip just fine - you can tell everyone to fuck off after youve made a pass.

If you wanna change the look, decide on a time period and go with it. Halibrand style wheels work well, Aluminum slots depends on the type for time period. Or run the fronts you have if you like them. Your truck. Your money.

Is this primarily a strip / race truck? Whats the rest of the set up.

I'd go for 5 spokes all around. TTs or maybe Cragars if you want bling. Nothing over 16".

    TTs = Maryanne
    Cragar = Ginger

I asked Rocket Racing if they make a matching 15x10 Launcher style wheel and here's their response:
"The Launcher is a purpose-built front Gasser Wheel and we couldn't find in our archival photos that this wheel actually was ever produced for the rear. Sorry."

  22. Thanks 5window. Sounds lame to me...oh, and MaryAnne is STILL good looking today!....I would take her in a New York minute....

  23. I agree with HRP depends on what part of the country.
We always called wheels, wheels..but if anybody mentioned their "rims" we all knew what they were talking about (just like on here).
    Never cared for mis-matched wheels..still don't.
Wheels are such an important component of a "look", that it's important to identify the era, type of build you are creating, and stay true to it.
Wheels and stance both worthy of serious thought..from wtf?, to that car is amazing!

5 spokes would be really nice.

I never liked slots, mostly because im 43 and any car I saw that had slots was stinkbug stance and had them hanging out the wheelwell. My own personal issue, I missed the slots heyday.

  25. I'd like to see them come up with even one 'archival photo' that shows those on an actual gasser....

  26. Mis-matched wheels were very common in the 60's. Stocker, Super Stocker, Gasser racers usually had a spare set of slicks on different wheel , or sometimes would borrow a set for testing. Completely period correct for a race vehicle.
This IS a pseudo race vehicle, right?

If it was mine it would get narrow Halibrand style gasser fronts and some 15 x 10 black steel wheels in the rear. Easy to find, not too hard on the budget and definitely keeps the racy vibe. Seen on lots of street/strip cars in the late fifties thru the sixties.
Nice truck, does it sound as mean as it looks?

I was responding to the OP's request. He has "racy" wheels now and wants to change them. Thought that was obvious.

Well...what's obvious to me is that he has 80s and newer rear racing type wheels, mixed with modern fake "gasser" front wheels. And wants it to be more like older (60s) drag cars. While steelies on back would work, they're not what most racers used back then--they wanted something light (which is why the wheel companies started making those really light multi piece aluminum wheels starting around 1970)
