Bill Moxley was my Great Grandfather! Cool to see these posters here! He had a small racetrack and built buggy cars for the his kids and the neighbors to play in. Bill was a wild character, and has lots of wild stories. My father has written some about him. We are in Oregon, hope you are enjoying the Northwest.
Hello Tea Tiger. A friend is restoring this 63 Studebaker Lark that won The A/CS class at the Championship Race in Green Valley Texas in '63. We've been trying to figure out the decals in the window and just determined that one of them is a "Bill Moxley Racing Slick" sticker. What a thrill to finally figure it out and to know that there is still family out there. Would be great to know what your father has written about him! Bill Moxley sticker is towards the bottom right of the rear side window. The photographer was J.R. Bloom and his family has been extremely helpful in providing high resolution copies of the pictures.
1960 Lions Dragstrip pits area Hello, I have this clipping about a guy named Bill Moxley. He was a tire salesman that we saw almost weekly at Lions Dragstrip in Long Beach/Wilmington during the 1958-60 seasons. He was well known in the pit area and as you can see in the background, our 1940 Willys Coupe was usually in the same area of the Lions Dragstrip area. This time period was during the month of June 1960 since we were still in the B/Gas Coupe Class with our 671 SBC motor. By the end of the month, we started our climb to the top of the C/Gas Coupe Class until our untimely disaster, in August of 1960. He was a classic salesman, offering deals after deals to anyone that walked by. We were offered a set of cheater slicks for our Impala to see if that would make a difference in the A/Stock class. It did not do much and we sold them to another drag racer. That classic Cadillac Eldorado Brougham was one fine car. As a salesman, he was relentless until a sale was made. But, he was always friendly and came over to our pit area many times, just to say hi and talk drag racing. We continued to use our 7 inch Bruce Slicks until that day in August. It was a funny thing that we kept telling him that those slicks he sold us were sitting at home, while we were racing the 1940 Willys Coupe in the B/Gas and then C/Gas classes. We did not have the heart to tell him that we sold the cheater slicks to one of our friends. Jnaki It was a fun time to be a teenager and drag racing enthusiast. We met some of the most colorful people in the pits and at Lions Dragstrip during those formative years. If this is the same Bill Moxley as in the slicks company, then he was a character like no other. Besides, who drives a classy, old car like a Cadillac Eldorado Brougham? or could afford one? our Willys coupe in B/Gas action
Thank you all that history! It makes the restoration of the car known as "The Whistler" even more fun to know the story behind the sticker in the window!
