I took out A Auto zone clutch kit on my 54 bel air v8 with A supert10 transmission and replaced it with A Ram muscle car preformance clutch kit. I'm using A G body bellhousing and original 54 clutch linkage and with the cheap clutch in it all work great. With the Ram clutch kit I had to adjust the link about 3/4in to get the clutch to release about one inch of the floor and one inch of free travel. I only have about 1/2in left on the link and would like the clutch to release more off the floor. The car is still up on Jack stands and I was turning the drive shaft with my daughter pushing the clutch. I contacted Summit racing and the guy said I might have to put A longer release bearing in it.I hate to take it back out and was wondering what y'all thought.
I've got 3 different lengths when I use the stock fork depending on the style of clutch. After I put in the trans I look where the arm is sticking or of the bell. If it wasn't where the last one was, I slide out the trans and try a different one. Good luck
Yes sir, it looked like the one I removed, I kinda think the heights on the pressure plat is different.
Does the new pressure plate have significantly more spring force? If so, it might be that the linkage is flexing.
We used an adjustable pivot ball to get the geometry right one time, that was on Lakewood steel housing, so may not be something that would work on a stock housing. Sent from my Nexus 5X using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Picture of the linkage before I removed it, the new set up I had to adjust the nut about 3/4in but have about 1/2 left .
i think truck throwout bearings are longer than cars. i thought i had to change one once, unsure been to long.
When the clutch pedal is pushed all the way down does the clutch fork hit the bell housing? Looks awful close in the picture with the red pressure plate. Maybe space the pivot ball so it is more forward to get more clearance for the clutch fork.
I was looking at the picture last night and wondered the same thing, you could hear it hitting the last inch when pressing the pedal. I used A flat foul and removed about 1/8 in that era and corrected it.
I adjust the link about A 1/4 and now have 3/4in of free play in the pedal and clutch will release about 2 to 2 1/4 in off the floor. I'm thinking about trying it and seeing, what do y'all think.
I had a similar problem with not enough travel to get the clutch to release. On the stock linkage there is a thick rubber bumper to prevent the linkage from tapping the firewall. By removing the bumper I gained the travel I needed. Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
I talked to A tech at Ram clutch yesterday and he said to put some miles on it ,that it would loosen up some.I finally got it out of the garage today and have been driving it and it is starting to release higher off the floor, think goodness. I also installed A set of 3.73 gears in it last weekend and really like them.
