1952-59 Ford Electric Power Steering update

  2. I'm very interested in this since my column is already cut and welded due to the failed Jeep power steering conversion i tried years ago. But, same as a lot of us went through with the Jeep setup, we see pics of the install but so far nobody has put miles on it yet. Also, what happens to the electric setup if something fails? do we still have a hard manual steer or does it lock up? Like i said, i'm interested and would like to see more of this.

    Hi, I am Dave Gulley. On the Saturn View steering you have a switch that is connected to a controller, you can turn the steering on or off and set sensitivity. In the off position, you have manual steering. If you were to use Toyota Prius electric steering it is connected directly to the ignition switch and is either on or off in relation to the ignition switch. It would allways default back to manual steering. I have not heard of any electric motors breaking. Hope this helps.

    All the information on the mustang and Falcon forums that I have read state that if the module were to fail or if you simply pull the power wire the steering defaults back to manual.

  5. Hey Dave, thanks for chiming in. I can't help but worry about these things now that i'm older and have children who will be riding around with me. Can i ask why you chose the Saturn over the other brands? Originally i was leaning towards the Prius or Corolla due to availability. I do like the idea of it coming on with the ignition. But now with my Tendinitis in both my arms, maybe i should look into something a little more controllable.

    Rockabilly, The reason I went with the Saturn steering was ,you can put a controller to turn it on and off. To set sensitivity. My friend has it on his Mustang and he likes the sensitivity control for road racing and slalom courses. The Toyota and Nesson are running in the default mode. Which means limp mode if you have a new car. It is not recommended by manufacturer to run indefinitely in limp mode. Again the people that are telling you not to use Saturn with the controller because it comes from a foreign country. The steering came out of a foreign car. The computer that you are reading this from and the majority of things around you are from a foreign country.

    If you look on youtube (or the other Ford Forums) there is several setups that do not require a box, just power. They have a default setting in case of box failure built in that apparently is just fine without the box.
