RIP Lee You did a lot of great things for the auto industry , including piss off Henry Ford Jr. Although I remember working on those POS K cars as a young mechanic...Do any of you guys remember the STUPID rubber insulators under the carb that would break in half?

One of my personal heroes. He used effort and hard work to accomplish goals, which earned my respect and admiration. And, he knew some stuff about cars.

I remember reading an interview of him in a magazine about 30+ years ago.

Opening question from reporter; "Do you believe there's a future in the automobile"?

Iacocca; "What the hell kind of a question is that? Of course there's a future in the automobile! What, do you think people are going to travel around on horseback"!?

 

Yes I do, and the use of front wheel drive and electronic controlled o2 sensor carburetor in the k car. Iacoca also tried to promote padded dash and seatbelts in 55 or 56 Fords. Didn't sell very well. Lead, follow or get out of the way !

 

Who else could take a lowly 6 cylinder Falcon, re-body it, and turn it into a marketing miracle.

 

Sad that we are losing minds like Lee and others.

 

Likely won’t be anyone like him at the top of a car company again. His work touched two of the most financially successful platforms ever in the auto business: the creation of the “pony car”, and the minivan. Most executives would be happy with just one of those.

A great American. He will be missed.

 

Thanks to this man Windsor assembly plant has been building these for thirty plus years.

Yeah, problem was you didn't have to look too hard at the time to find one. He was the ultimate salesman. Excellent products don't need excellent salesmen, they can sell themselves. I think he even tried a presidential campaign in his hey day. A corporate CEO as president of the US? Nah, it'd never happen.

 

Oddly enough those ugly little sumbitches are quick and handle like sports cars. I won't own one to save the last remnants of my masculinity.

 

I don't agree with that. I had two mini vans that got over 250000 miles on each of them. my wife drove the wheels off of them. great cars. I had a Shelby Dakota also. the truck could do 120 mph as advertised. it could also take out a mustang gt in the quarter mile.

 

Was that a 4 cyl. motor?? 2.2L????

Think you missed this one. Ford sold out of seat belts because they didn't anticipate the need.

 

1956 Ford was the only manufacture that offered a lifeguard safety package consisting of seat belts,padded dash and a breakaway rear view mirror.It was not a big seller. Sorry I can't understand how they ran out of seat belts. They were not seen in cars till years afterward.
