Saturday night August 11, 1962, 57 years ago. Orange Show Speedway, Southern California. Fan favorite Hot Rod racer Vallie Engelauf gives 6 of his fans a lap around Orange Show after the races. Each expression on the kids faces is worth a million dollars. Once upon a time.
Up in Gillette, Wyoming about 10 years ago, they had a late model with a passenger seat in it so folks could go for some laps, but this pic up above is way cooler.
Now that's a great picture. It reminded of the kinds of things I would do as a kid like riding in the back of a pickup or on the back of a motorcycle. I'm glad I grew up when I did and got to do the kinds of things kids today will probably never experience in our politically correct world.
When I lived in South Ga. and raced dirt late models non of my neighbors would complain about me testing my car on our dirt road as long as I would give their kids a ride in the car. They would be waiting for me at the end of their driveways. Doing a donut in the middle of the road with a couple of kids in the car was priceless to see them hang on to the roll cage and just laughing. Different time and people are different today.
Different times fer sure......You see on the "news" the woman lightly smacked her dog for jumping?! The police are investigating for animal cruelty!! (in California, of course) Never mind.........I won't even say it! 6sally6
Dusty, we’ve got one of those here in Muskogee. One of the track owners has one and it has won championships! There’s a waiting list for the ride! Bones
way cool! when my friend used to race at Lakeport Speedway after the race a dozen kids would pile in the car for a slow lap around the track. Did it at Ukiah too.
Iowa seat belt law states you have to be in a booster seat till age 11 so looks like those kiddies are over 11 so looks legal to me ....and a hell of a lot of REAL fun. Screw the video games this was real hands on excitement back in our days! Great photo!
how did we ever survive childhood without all these restrictions. the leading cause of death for kids is still accidental injury.
