A lot of us may be guilty of letting our projects sit for a time with old fuel left in them, check out these pictures. https://www.google.com/search?q=eth...kAhWdIjQIHZYxDOUQsAR6BAgDEAE&biw=1343&bih=648
But how often do you let the car sit without driving it ? If you are putting some miles on it and keeping fresh fuel flowing that may be helping it not to deteriorate and lessen the effects of corrosion.
I agree with Paul and mine has had fuel in it for years at a time only topping up.I suspect some of these horror stories have a lot more to them.when I do take it out I drive for at least 2 hours at a time.I will say 3-4 years ago I was changing float in tank and noticed a cloudy look to fuel.took carb apart and found a powdery type residue in bowl wiped it out and carried on.I had put a filter in line before pump this went through the filter that is how fine it is.
I switch over to ethanol free gas in the fall. No more problems like in the pics. Just like the old days..
Another thing ethanol does is it will harden the older material fuel lines so any flexible lines should be replaced with the newer lines rated for fuel injection. A couple of years ago I had a line get hard and crack and it started a fire by the distributor I got it out fast but it fried the cap and wires on the HEI. So give all your flex lines a feel if they won't flex replace them.
I tried the ethanol once. My old car left me sitting on the side of the road. It will not run on that stuff.
