Just make sure the brass weld is very clean before paint . Also if you need to replace it ,its best to cut out past the brazed weld . It can not be welded on top of with steel wire .
Not much has been happening around here. Work and summer in the way. Getting my 2 year old’s room/parts storage area set up a bit better... Built a hoop to mount my 2002 BMW box on to have cowl steering. Not much room in the cab so everything is tight. Quick firewall and floor boards mocked up. They will have beads ran in them for stiffness. Tunnel movked up as well. Attempted to make it in one piece...but you dont want to see that. Practice practice. Decided that I wasnt going to find a decent used box so I bought one from LMC. I like the look of the tube rails rather than the square factory ones that ford had in 36. Plus, I can make my own bead profiles in the sides if I want to get fancy. Once I picked it up, I drilled out the spot welds in the rear stake pockets, cut the box down to the same size as my blue test panel (as pictured previously), then spot welded it back together.
My ‘63 401 Nailhead that I bought a few years ago turned out to have some issues...hopefully its going to work out with some honing. Dont want to spend money. Taking it to a guy this weekend to work some magic.
^^that middle picture with your kid peeking out, but as I kept scrolling, then see her feet on the ground.. Priceless Photo...
Thanks. That was the plan to get the proportions right. Too many trucks have the rear tire almost touching the cab or the rear of the box chopped off right behind the tire.
Summer has got in the way a bit but some progress has been made. Got my wishbones all mocked up with suicide perches. Dont like how guys just sleeve the bone, so I bent plates to wrap around and then weld some home made perches to them. Moved onto the rear frame rails that I had to extend to fit a 16 gallon Tanks inc gas tank. It mounts on the bottom of the tank which is nice. Will also be able to hold my Crafty B gashole cap. Once the bed floor is on, the tank will be hidden and only the gashole cap will be seen. ***On April 2nd I made the mistake of ordering from Howells Sheet Metal. I need some door bottoms and didnt want to make them. They answered the phone a month after I placed my order and said that the parts would be shipped in 2 weeks....its been 4 months since and they wont answer phone calls or emails. Hopefully PayPal refunds me. SCAMMERS!!!
It was hard to find a rad that would work with the frame and the 38 Plymouth grille shell but I measured the Walker rad on my 32 5 window and the width was right. Just needed to get the “lowboy” rad from them. Mounted perfectly on the front because I had narrowed up a 32 style front crossmember. I picked up an old Dodge minivan middle seat which should work pretty good. Im 6’2” tall and my head was hitting the roof and visibility out the front window was poor, so I took the legs off. Looks like it will work pretty good. Just to shorten up the brackets to mount. Most likely I will keep the armrests unless I make some on the inner door panels.
"Trick idea" on the arm rest... Me likez! Definitely NOT cookie-cutter. Getting impatient for more pics and progress 6sally6
Been kicking around a similar build for my 36 and found this... Looks killer so far. Proportions are money IMO. Subscribed so I can steal all your ideas... Cept I'll probably let you keep the brass
This is not typically the style of build I'm into but this one has some really creative fab work and you made use of a truck cab (and other stuff) that most would have written off and I definitely like those aspects, I look forward to seeing more.
Update...finally. After a busy winter...and spring...and summer, Im finally back on it. Threw the Nailhead in but started looking at how much work it will take to get this cab ready for paint. The rear roof section and back panel are very bad, so I came up with a new plan...
So this is the evolution. I have been thinking about this for a while. Make a 35/36 cab into a 33/34 style coupe. In the attached photoshop pictures I used a 34 style cowl/A pillar section, and added a rear roof piece and quarters. Just might work.
I called up a buddy who had a really good 35 cab and some 1934 four door parts. The plan is to use the new 35 cab on my current frame and continue a pickup project. Then I can keep hacking up the 36 cab. After no one drove by that I could flag down to help me, I man handled both cabs solo. Its amazing what a tiny little 7+” chop will do to the look haha (sarcasm fyi)
After switching cabs, I decided to eyeball the coupe idea. I think it will work. Photoshopped quarters on again. I plan to make mine from scratch after taking some flexible shape patterns off of a buddies 34 3 window.
I was digging the pickup build, looks great with the Mopar grill. Where did you get your English wheel? That thing is impressive.
Thanks. The pickup build is going to continue as originally planned, just with a better cab. I built the English wheel. The only purchased parts are the lower dies (a china set of dies and a Hoosier Profile set)
I think you're drunk... But I also want to see the coupe thing play out, so.. Pics or it never happened!
Wow!? I've bought from Howell's a couple of times, last being a firewall for a Model A two years ago. Always prompt, accurate. Sorry about your bad experience.
