Folks Of Interest Early Stewart Warner gauge thread

I have various old Stewart Warner gauges around here. Will have to see what I can put my hands on. Here's a winged curved glass vacuum gauge that has been just used as a shelf decoration for a LONG time.

 

Just rebuilt the Master Meter from the Stewart Warner speedometer test bench I got with the inventory lot I purchased from the retired owner of Kansas City speedometer. So now the test bench will be ready to put into service.

Is this the AMP gauge you were referring to?
That is a Stewart Warner. That style is pretty easy to find and affordable.

Here's an outstanding 1930's Stewart Warner 2 3/8" rear mount temp gauge. It was in need of a new line, capillary tube/recharge, armor, nut and calibration. With that complete, It functions like the day it left the S.W. factory.

 

Found these 4 large diameter curved glass NOS gauges that I forgot I had while looking for something else a couple weeks ago.

 

@whitknuckle Wow, that's a heck of a set of AMPS gauges to "forget you had" Nice find. Although S.W. made more AMPS gauges in that series than any other (temp, oil prsssure, gas, etc) they are still very desirable! Those are 2 5/8", curved glass, tulip needle, smooth bezel, front mount gauges. They were made from the 1940's through the 50's. Very nice!!
You could always send them to me for safe keeping

These old Stewart Warner hand tachometers were pretty common. They're still pretty easy to come by these days. Here's one of mine.

 

I recently had a great Stewart Warner score. For years I've searched for this manual and have finally found one. It's the Stewart Warner Hitting On All 6 manual (1930 throught 1940's) It's a wealth of information on Stewart Warner's early lineup of gauges and it has answered some of my questions.
It's in remarkable condition for its age.

 

Is that one of the group on eBay the past couple of weeks? Good score!

Thanks to @Speed~On I think I finally figured out what my gauge panel is from!

 

@Moriarity That is a great SW sales display you have, so darn cool!! HAMBers, I was fortunate enough to see this first hand last June during a visit with Moriarity. As many of you know his collection is superb.

@cactus1 Outstanding, glad I could help! That is an incredible panel you have! Absolutely beautiful. They were used in high end wood boats. They are difficult to come by for several reasons 1) they were made in the 1930's 2) the wood boat guys want them for their high end restorations. Those panels typically bring big $$$. If your AMPS gauge ever takes a dump, let me know. As you can see I have 2 NOS.

Stewart Warner sent me an awesome little gift the other day. I am pretty stoked. It's a very limited edition badge.

I contacted our fellow HAMBer, Rusty last week as he had stated he purchased the inventory from a former speedometer shop. I asked him if he had any historic Stewart Warner manuals. He looked through his boxes and found one. He said he would sell it....so that was that.

It's the Stewart Warner BOOK of PROFITS from 1950. This incredible manual contains a lot of great information. All the part numbers, how to's, price guides, etc. It really is quite amazing!! Thank you, Rusty!!

Sorry guys, I really dork out over vintage Stewart Warner gauges. Especially the 2 5/8", smooth bezel, curved glass, crescent needle, front mounts from the 1930's through the 1940's. You know....back when you could buy one new for $10. Now they're $550 and north of that for a decent Temp or Gas gauge

Glad you're enjoying the book it's amazing to see the prices that stuff went for back in the day. You're the perfect caretaker for that catalogue.
It's got some great info, pictures and part numbers for speedometers that SW made for the big three automakers.
You can also copy the inventory forms to log your collection.

I was given these scuzzy old SW,s the other day and could use some help with identifying them. I am guessing they are nothing special but its very unusual to turn up old SW,s here in Tasmania. Just wondering if any one can date them . I am thinking they are probably industrial or marine as they have brass bodies . Also there s a pic of a Merc Marine dash panel I picked up at Long Beach Swapmeet last year for $5.00.!

Not early. If they have brass housings and side windows you are looking 60's at the earliest. If they have a hole for a light bulb they are even later. Other than the 70's Stewart Warner Greenline in the Mer Cruiser panel, the other two gauges are not SW. Not sure on the tach. The panel would have came with an ignition bezel and switch in the empty hole, which would have been the most valuable component.

 

Yeah DW,I kinda thought they would n,t be too special, but here in Tasmania, you just don't see SW,s that often. Most vintage gauges that we see at swap meets are English Smiths brand.
None of them have holes for the lights, so early 60,s to 70,s?

 

In my gauge collection I have a gas gauge that has what looks to me like a transistor on the back. I’m curious about that, when it might have been made and what the approximate value might be. Thank you
