1938 ford pick up 1953 8ba Pressed steel bell house T5 1971 mustang 9 inch with 56.5 maverick sjafts. Econo front brakes Chassis engineering spindles Rhd saginaw 525 Stock 38 thd pedals
Looks like you got a little chassis repair work ahead of you too. Im interested and would be glad to tag along and see what you do
Yes. Purchased it all in bits from the one guy. Picked it all up in a mercedes van.. frames is rusted out and twisted. Been in a fire All the body parts have been in a fire---less paint removal!! The cab and doors are riddled with bullet holes I have cut and drilled all the rivets out and wire wheeled the frame. Bolted it together last night. Needed to put it all together to see what I have, never stood next to a 38 pick up before!! built up the axle with 4.11's -open diff 71 mustang case, stock 76 maverick shafts, 10 by 2.5 finned brakes from a 1980 ford something. A few things I have learned only today.... A posies 37 to 40 1'' dropped spring is 39 inches long unladen, laden its 39.75 , part number 2040 I think they still list them on ebay as 35-40, but I am sure 35 and 36 fords have a narrower spring perch/wishbone They list some on ebay at 33.5'' They do not fit.. they are for I think earlier axles spring over - bought one of them already. When fitting a 1 inch dropped posies spring to a 37 to 40 axle put the wishbone and axle on the bench. Clamp the spring with big cramps. Dont try doing it in the vehicle. 2. An a or b front shackle doesnt fit. Its not wide enough, I think they are 2.5'' internal, you need 2.75'', you can squeeze them in by flattening the u bolt and filing up the cross member holes 3. a Mitsubishi l200 front bump stop looks and fits exactly like a 38 ford!!!
you have done good with a real challenge - yes, very difficult, and expensive, learning what fits and does not. be sure to ask here for help and ideas with this project
Cool truck Nobby, although, I am biased as I have a 35'Ford. It is in storage in our son's workshop at the moment as we moved house in the last year, and I am in the middle of building a new garage, then I can get on with finishing it. Where in Lundinium are you?, as we lived in Pimlico for 26 years. Cheers , and good luck with the build. Charlie.
Henrietta the '38 Ford pickup sends friendly horn honks to you and your '38. Sheet metal that has been through a fire is hard to work. I'd rather deal with bullet holes.
got a bit confused searching for a wishbone ball and clamp, I didn't have any to start with so didn't know what they looked like.. they are called Radius Rod Bushing (Rubber Ball) Cover Thanks for the beep -not far from Pimlico.. Fulham, the inside measurement of the front spring shackle is 65mm the do not measure the shackle on centres, the internal measurement this is a trailer spring plate 15 quid, hope it fits ordered some m12 65mm square u-bolts
engine fun bought two 8ba's a couple of months ago thought I'd make one good one out of the two both engines were full of sand up to the intake on two cylinders at tdc the sand had rotted the pistons thing is they don't look cracked in the usual places!! may need a few liners...… don't know why I used white vinegar to soak the bores View attachment 4438492 View attachment 4438492 what a chore View attachment 4438492 still have one stuck valve and guide, need to cut it.
Bummer, I have both the drivers side and passenger side doors, a hood and a variety of other 38 Ford truck parts sitting on my property... The problem is I am just about diametrically opposed to you on the planet. The cost to ship heavy awkward sized parts work be prohibitive Good luck with your project, keep at it, you’ll get her going
Hello ratreo, I do have doors and a hood ! luckily the hood escaped the fire!! the doors are real bad I am having trouble finding a 35-40 front shackle.... think I need a stock one am also having trouble reaming my king pin bushes... bought an adjustable reamer that was too big, bought one that was too small and broke it.
So I have the stock front end which is a “spring over “ configuration. Tell me what you need. If I have it I may be willing to split some of the parts up so someone can get benefit from it. As I remember the wishbone socket assy has been incorporated into the reconfigured frame. The screwball that previously owned the truck had preformed a hideous chop. He was sooooo proud of his welding expertise... It looked like he “hot dribbled” the roof skin back together. I’ll try to find the cab pics
Mitsubishi l200 springs and shackkes and bushes 165 delivered Shocks 38 Lower shock mounts 49 delivered Bump stops 28 pair delivered the bump stops turn the thinner 2 3/4'' axle tube to 3'' so - you can use 3'' u-bolts, plus you get a bump stop!!! Swap meet 2 3/4 axle saddles ne 10 pound Looks like it may work. Shocks need to point forwards and back. Twin shock crossmembers - - can only go one way
I think that is a 35 36 front wish bone and cross member I think you can use that wishbone in its stock central configuration with say a so-cal axle, and bolt it in a 35-40 frame the wishbone on a 37 38 39 is wider at the perch
[QUOTE : I am having trouble finding a 35-40 front shackle.... think I need a stock one am also having trouble reaming my king pin bushes... bought an adjustable reamer that was too big, bought one that was too small and broke it.[/QUOTE] I (as you’ve seen in the pics) have the main spring and all of the leaves along with the shackle brackets. Do you only need the shackle brackets? Is your main spring in good shape? Once again, if there are some parts that would help you maybe we can work out a deal to get them cut apart, boxed up and shipped in your direction. I’ve built a number of cars and trucks. As a suggestion be cautious how much you cleanup/remove material when you ream out your king pin bores. It doesn’t take very much to go too far. Usually the bores and upper and lower faces has surface rust on them. Often I’ve found that a flat file for the upper and lower surface is enough combined with scotch brite in the bore will get you started. Be careful that your reamer is true to the axis of the king pin bore and that you’re flushing the rust and small chips out as you are “lightly” reaming the bores out. It’s easy to mess it up. Many cars with “death wobble” woes can be traced back to loose king pins and too loose perch pin bores.
Along with bad geometry with your steering. Oops, I believe that I’ve opened a pandora’s box on this subject...
Hi i have bought a posies new 1 inch lower spring I have new chassis engineerinspidles with the fat girth they come without the bushes so tgey are not fit then reamed I have a stock axle and bone which i am using unsplit. Got new pins and bushes I think you are correct in that it msybe the axke bore at fault if its not bushed and reamed. As the cotter pin may hold it tight. But it can still rock Just want to get it on its wheels Will do the usual. Track with to tyre centres Ackernann Steeribf arm lengths Steeribg hox ratio
ackkk! surly that was not a taunt about the beatific welding technique????? “go away or i will taunt you a second time”
I assumeeeee you know the 38 and 39 pick ups are about the same for parts. the grille is a little different and the windshield crank is horizontal on the 38.The 1935 and 36 axle is 2 inches at the perch boss. the later axles are 2.25 inches .
ratreo, ineed the back half of a38-39 ford cab? i am also a ways away but what do you have? thanks Chuck.
this nearly is correct # use a 3/4 double d shaft and double stick tape strips of 120 emery onto it increasing the width of the strips as you go finally have the pins in - hooray how does the windscreen centre bar work? is it fixed at the bottom or is it a loose piece and has top and bottom receiver bits- I think mine is rotted off at the bottom, if so can you gat the bars separate? thanks!! PARTS WANTED I could do with a grille centre bar v8 badge could do with a 38 window crank handle door handles
how does the rad fit I gather since I have rad prop tabs on the firewall, the top of the rad takes the rods? I need a radiator.. I gather I can't then get a 51 ford car style as have to have the prop tabs and the lower mounting for the springs ?? do I buy a 32 rad with the filler not on the top?
