I have an aftermarket floor shift, no key, 32 inch column in a box. I need to shorten the outer tube due to to firewall and header restrictions. I don't need to cut the shaft. The outer tube needs to around 24 inches. I was thinking about cutting the tube 2 inches from the bottom, remove the 8 inches needed, and tig it back together. It's a floor shift column so I don't think there should be anything else in there. Anyone here done this?

Photos? What's on the end of the outer tube that you need to keep? Why not just cut it off and but the bushing in the (new) end?

That would work too. I've only had factory column shift columns apart and there is the inner tube and other crap in there

  4. Make up a plug bushing for the end. Pre-drill, tap and install the bushing into the loose column.

That's what I would do also, just put a bushing or bearing in the bottom of the column mast. That and the column drop will be plenty to support it.

Not sure what you are putting this in but as long as you already plan on a short column you might consider this layout.
Stubby aluminum column I made, only the 3/4" shaft passes through the firewall with the first joint on the inside which allow an angle change before it gets close to the header area.
This also gives you more flexibility for column angle/ steering wheel placement and also negates the need for a tilt column.

I did something similar on my 66 Suburban, had Ididit build this column, it's around 24 inches long.

This shot of my Suburban shows the value in changing shaft angle (in two planes) before it enters the engine compartment.
