I'm building a gasser type 61 Falcon. I've searched the web and this forum for fenderwell headers for a SBF 289. Haven't found a pair yet. I've tried 65-66 Mustang chassis headers but they wont work. Cylinders 7-8 are very close to steering box. Anyone have some info on this swap?
    Thanks! IMG_0541.JPG

Quite a few Falcons running with the Southeast Gassers or their Texas group, you could ask them.

Buy a sprint car header kit from Speedway and build your own.

Any chassis headers you will find will be small tube , if you need 1 3/4" build your own.

  5. Gonna have to build em...All Falcons suck for header applications...as you’ve discovered your steering box will taunt you.

Like people have said before, build your own. That way you know they will fit.

I agree. I have a chevy SBC sitting in it now with Chevy II headers just to see if it works better. Still would have a problem with pan sump clearance. Might have to change it to front steer or get a front sump Chevy II pan. I have a 289/C4 setup. Wanted to be brand correct but, not sure what to do. LOL

My engine choice sure wouldn't be decided on a set of rusty headers. Build your own from a kit.

    I have a 66 289 and a d4 code C4. I'm undecided on what to do.

  11. Uh, easy question to answer: put the Small Block Chevrolet in it and go fast!

Put the Chevy in the corner of the garage for a future project and the 289 in the falcon. Simple...

    That's a pretty sizeable tube for a 289........unless it's a pretty "snotty" one.

  16. Not sure about fenderwell headers but FPA(Ford Powertrain Applications) had a set of long tubes that fit snug & right in my o/t Falcon.
    Easy to deal with.
Might want to check out Crites too.
Really like where you're going with the old bird!

  17. I vote for the Ford drive train but I think that little car needs a third pedal.
Again, cool car, wish it was in my garage!
Ps. The C4 will take a lot of shit depending on how much Hp you plan to throw at it & how sticky your back tires are.

I wonder if a set of stock Fox body headers would work...???.....

I'll check those out. I don't mind building a set but, I can't TIG so I'd have to farm out welding.
The fox body headers dump right at the steering box. No go. :(

The easiest way would be to use the Mustang chassis headers and redo the 7-8 tubes if those are the only ones that give you fitment problems. Wouldn't be as cool looking as a set of custom fender wells though.

That is a thought!. Going to pull the SBC today and put the SBF back in. I'll do some more checking.

This sbc guy thinks this is a wise decision.
I knew a guy in the early 70's, that had a plain green 61 Falcon sedan with black steel wheels, he built a "killer" 221/T-10 4 speed and 9 inch rear, boy, what a sleeper, sucked in a lot of "hey, ya want to run it" types.

Probably not, they wouldn't clear in a '54 Ford car 302 swap they were up against the a-arm on the passenger side and too close to the steering box on the drivers side but those will clear in a 1949-52 car swap. The HEDMAN 88400's will work in 1949-59 Ford cars with a 302. (small 1.5" primaries) A while back a guy used SBC fenderwells by removing the flanges and tweaking SBF flanges to fit them.

  27. nope.....I’ve got Dougs...which are supposed to be the top of the line for fit and finish...I’ve gotten as far as getting every bolt on the hole and finger tight...Falcon engine compartments are narrower than a Mustang...man I wish I had smaller hands and arms...

  28. Well....didn’t even notice....it’s a Gasser....you got plenty of room to fab something up...man getting old sucks

This would be the easiest set of headers to build. Don't be afraid to order the Speedway sprint car headers and make some.

Another easy option would be to cut the flange off the Chevy fenderwells, bolt a set of Ford flanges to the heads and make the Chevys fit.

With all that room to work this would be extremely easy.

The port spacing is quite a bit different from Ford to Chevy, you would to spread the two center tubes out a couple inches to adapt to the Ford flange.. I've done that trick with chevy to y-block headers though.
