Hey guys, I am having trouble finding an alternator bracket for my 283 with no mounting holes in the heads. Any ideas would be welcome, top preferable in chrome. Thanks, Dusty
Original mounted to the right or left exhaust manifold front 2 bolts. The stock generator one could be used with spacers. Some stock cast iron exhaust had a flat area in front with 2 holes for their Alt brackets. I don’t remember a top one but would ez enough to fab to fit either side front 2 intake bolts. 3/16” flat stock, 3/8” drill, hacksaw, grinder and files, and a welder.
A long water pump is what came with the engine. This is on my T and does not have the cast iron manifolds. Right now it has a sketchy driver's side low mount...
To my knowledge a 283 never came with a long water pump. This one is made with that dreaded "B" aluminum but that could have the shiny brushed off it or be painted. Ebay item. 332254313188 Seller ***umes all responsibility for this listing. That isn't a bad looking unit though. That guy sells a lot of different alternator brackets all whittled out of aluminum.
This what I had on a 283.Bottom exhaust manifold has the 2 holes for alternator or generator bracket.
If you want to keep using the long pump you can use the regular mounts for that pump/alternator. You will need to fab a mount between the pump the front exhaust bolt, this is to take the place of the threaded hole in the head. I mounted mine low (short pump)but hinged it on the bottom, this gave better belt contact and made it easier to adjust, i also used a small alternator off a small Jap car. JW
I was kinda hoping that someone made a bracket to make this work... oh well, when I get to that part of this project I will make something.
Here is Alan Grove long water pump SBC options http://www.alangrovecomponents.com/Small_Block_Long_Pump.htm Phil
Thanks guys, this information is a huge help. It looks like Alan Grove has a bracket that fits with a standard mount and works for the hole in the later heads.
There’s 2 styles of front accessories and each had its own Left, right arrangement. The styles are short Water pump and long water pump - short water pump goes with early no hole heads. While the long water pump came later and those heads have “ACCESSORY MOUNT HOLES” Basically when running the long water pump everything accessory wise is pushed out towards the front. Everything has room then to fit infront of the head and was moved either up or down utilizing the holes in the head. And of course running a SWP moves everything tighter to the block and things mount above or below the heads not in front. Very very easy to run a SWP and later heads by using early brackets - you just don’t use any of those “ACCESSORY MOUNTING HOLES” Meanwhile it is extremely difficult to use a long water pump and later brackets on EARLY HEADS THAT DO NOT HAVE ACCESSORY MOUNTING HOLES THAT GO WITH THE LONG WATER PUMP. With the early short water pump the generator or alternator mounted high on the drivers side utilizing the exhaust manifold. With the later long water pump the alternator mounted high on the p***enger side utilizing the head. There’s some later vans and corvette stuff that has short water pump but that stuff mounts either very high and narrow in the van or wide and low in the corvette.

I'm not a Corvette nerd so not sure of this but didn't they keep the short pump for a few years after the accessory bolt heads came out in 69.
I took a long arm, cut it shorter, put a dog leg into it, then took a stock lower mount and redrilled it and came up with a mid mount for my car, so you can just make one yourself with a little thought.
