That's a German Shorthair Pointer (hunting dog) or Deutsch Kurzhaar, probably imported dog back then before AKC.... "The breed was brought to America in1925 by Dr. Charles Thornton of Montana, who began breeding the dogs."

These were the day's when you needed to be an artist and have talent to own a sign shop.
Today if you walk into most sign shops and tell them you want something hand lettered they kind of steer at you like deer in the headlights of a car!
