Now if you are talking just cool cars from the HAMB era not just hot rods I think the chopped merc takes the cake for me.

65 or earlier? I like a 64 fury ok and a friend in high school had one that I rode in some.
As far as Iconic I would say some of the Max wedge stuff etc. would be in there.
Not sure what category it would be labeled in but I would say the little red wagon is pretty Iconic. even tho it probably wouldnt be an iconic most popular body style.

  4. No doubt in my mind the '50 Mercury IS the most iconic Custom Car. HRP

32's don't impress me in any way shape or form. Chevy's don't impress me. Mopar's don't impress me. Not a lot impresses me.

What does impress me are the cars that people put time and effort into. Money? Who cares what someone had spent on their car? Doesn't impress me. More like showing off your wallet.
I'll walk over to someone's wreak that they are showing before I walk to see the glam rods.
Talk about "cookie cutter rods", the '32's have been over done. Bring on the 1920's, the 30-31's. Bring on the 40's, 50's and 60's rods.

Speaking of the HHR...The HHR is modeled after the 1940's Suburban.

I've often wondered this, myself. People were hot rodding in the 1920's but I always assumed that it was because there was an abundance of ford parts and after WWII, the returning soldiers were tired of the small jeeps and wanted something larger and light and easy to work on.

I saw an interview with Jhon Force after a round win and he referred to his funny car as " this old hotrod " and I can't argue with that. Purpose built, damn fast, HotRod. Now I have to admit I didn't think of fuel car as a HotRod prior to that interview but I can now.
I find it funny how the guys with the pre 48 cars think thay have the copyright to the layble HotRod its just foolish. My 64 Fairlane is/will be all performance with little or no compromise. It will run mid 11s in the quarter, actually faster but I don't want a 6 point in it, HotRod I think so, it's not a custom, the only body mods are performance mods. I'm a retired bodyman/painter that worked for House of kolor 40 years ago so the vintage burgandy will be in a shade of kandy, krazy or mild to be deturmond.
My point is the early cars don't own, aren't exclusive privy to the term HotRod.

  10. A hot rod is what you yourself make it and believe it to be. If you think it is a fast hot rod, well then you have to prove it.

the one.jpg 200.jpg Your going to get as many opinions as there are people on this site. I believe it all depends on the era, what your experiences have been with cars, and probably when you became aware of how cool cars were. Let's face it how many guys build replicas of famous cars or want the car that cruised their town when they were young or want the car their dad had.

    Yeah, lots of variables.
    To whom? When? Etc.

    But...
The Bob McGee / Dick Scritchfield
    1932 Ford Highboy Roadster
    is a pretty good answer.

Danny (HOTRODPRIMER) posted this video recently but I couldn't find his thread.
    Here it is again.

I think because Fords were the most common car that guys started modifying back when. They were cheap and plentiful.

A lot of guys posting here what they like or think are the best looking cars but that does not make them iconic. Like I said, I prefer a 33/34 over a Deuce but I admit a Deuce is more iconic. There are a million cool cars out there but when you say "hot rod", a '32 Ford is what comes to mind. That's probably why there are more '32 Ford hot rods running around now than Henry originally made!

Unless it looks good with no fenders, it ain't old enough to be a hot rod.

I have to agree that fenderless rods have to be right in there, since that’s where a lot of it all started. There are some great rods with fenders too, but I prefer the others. Just an opinion.

The pre-'49 guys DO have a copyright on the term Hot Rod because that IS the universal definition of a Hot Rod/Street Rod...a pre 1949 Modified vehicle !
Look, Hot Rod is not some magical term that makes any car MORE special...it's JUST a definition.
It would be foolish to call your Fairlane a "Lead Sled". Why ? Because it doesn't fit the definition of a Lead Sled. Same goes for wanting to call it a Hot Rod.
