Been lurking around for a while, thought I’d introduce myself. Just brought home an Olds 324 and will soon be elbow deep in it, will hopefully be putting it into a ‘49 Chevy coupe, like my dad did along with the Lasalle trans that I picked up with it. This is my dad and his ‘49 in 1957. Im in Southern Idaho at the moment, will be moving back to So. Cal in the near future. It’s a pleasure to meet you all. Welcome aboard! Love those Olds engines especially with the Lasalle. Have you been thru the Lasalle yet? Tough to locate certain parts. I gave up on mine and switched over to the 37 Buick case with a 57 Olds gear gut. What is the history on the 324?
Thanks! I havent had a chance to open up the Lasalle yet Im hoping to this weekend. I dont know the history of the engine, according to the PO its a runner but he’s never been inside it. He’s about 80 years old and had more early Olds stuff than Ive ever seen, along with cars (all hot rods). He’s going through his shop and will be putting together some parts he said I will probably need. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
JJ2 I was ***uming you meant a floor shift Lasalle but I see above that it is the later side shift. Nothing wrong with that and it is by far easier to find parts for the side shifters. Hope you got the flywheel for the engine. I still have parts hanging around for the later cad trannies, Inspect the synchro and the 1st/reverse gear. Since these are not synchro in first the gears are normally chewed up pretty bad. Take pics, we can get you thru most things.
Thats great I appreciate it, I’ll take all the help I can get. I just bought a ‘50 bellhousing and Ive got a line on a flywheel should be picking it up in a couple of weeks. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Do you have the input shaft snout or "candle stick" for the bell housing? There are several depending on year so be sure to get one that fits the bell and the ****** input shaft. Also, there are several flywheels, 303/324/371. 303 was typically a 6 volt engine with the 6 volt starter while the 324 was 12 volt. 371 is an external balanced piece and kinda rare. The 324 is a 176 tooth unit. Be sure to check it for extensive stress cracks that will necessitate machining. Lastly, those small spring clips that retain the TOB are very hard to locate so don't lose them.
I removed the Lasalle bellhousing and the snout was on it, should I start looking for a ‘50 Olds snout? Thanks for the heads up! Im gonna need a shifter too, it looks like they’re not easy to find either. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I have a bunch of stuff in storage and hope to get it out and into the new garage this summer. Might have a snout but in the mean time best to see if it might fit into the 50 bell. Stranger things have happened. I may also have the brackets for a shifter.
The bellhousing should be here tomorrow I’ll check to see if that snout fits, I’ll most likely take you up on that shifter bracket if you’re not in need, thanks much! Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Good deal on that. While we are looking at this you may check that the shift rail on the PS of the ****** extends when in use requiring a relief hole in the housing. Often you can put a small frost plug in the front of the hole to prevent any contamination getting to the clutch. I have seen some fellas grind a bit off of the shift rail to shorten the length. Can't remember if that is necessary with the 50 bell but I know on my 51 bell that was required. Also there is a face gasket required between the housing and the ******. Best Gasket has the set available for the Cad ******. And lastly, looks like it is time to give your hammer some TLC
