I dont know how people find the time to do this much work on a car, i'm in awe of your skills and dedication. My 40 is still plodding along, and will probably be finished about the same time as yours, but with less than half the effort. Hats off, and love the chop.
Finally back to work on the 40. Bathing the frame in Evaporust in preparation for boxing plates. As soon as the frame is clean the body is getting the same treatment.
Welcome back! So, this 'Evaporust' stuff really works? The picture looks pretty impressive, how do you stop it flash rusting when you wash it off?
It works well as long as you keep the part wet. I'm going to take it to the shop when I'm done and steam clean it, the heat should make it evaporate quick enough to not flash rust. Sent from my Pixel 2 using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Really glad to see you back on this. It is one of my favorite threads here. I'm very interested in seeing how the frame comes out using Evaporust. I'm using it on a lot of small parts and really like it. Seriously thinking about if for my '26 Chevy frame. I'm also using Rust Doctor, I plan on using it on all the body pieces before I put them back together. You get a lot of coverage from a gallon and it leaves a primer coat.
I really dig this thread for a couple reasons. The main one being that there is some incredible work done here. The second being that your build thread and my build thread seem to be progressing at the same rate (albeit you seem to have way more skills than I do.)
Speedway. Order it through Amazon, the shipping was $150 cheaper than direct from Speedway. Sent from my Pixel 2 using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
The pics in the first post still show if you view the HAMB with a browser, not sure why they don't work in the app.
Weird. I tried from my phone and laptop (both w/o the app) and I can't see them. Anyway, slick work. Looking forward to more.
Thanks, It helps to remind us where you started. We can only admire your tenacity. That's a good thing.
I found a Painless wiring harness like I had in my gasser, NIB on eBay. And it was 5mi from my house.
That is insane! I'd always forget to turn something on ...or off. I'd like for the only switch to be to the battery.
That's what the "key" was in my gasser, a master kill switch like this one: I'll have the same setup in the coupe.
That's as simple as it gets. I got a woven cloth wire set for my roadster. If I can do my part it will be really nice.
Big week for me this week. I jumped through all the hoops and doubled the value of my coupe. I also started an engine swap at work on one of my employer's cars. It's an old Wood Brothers show car, pulled a good running 302 to make room for a 429. My employer gave me the 302 and sold me a toploader complete with a Lakewood blow proof bellhousing, flywheel, clutch and Hurst Comp + shifter for $300. Hopefully I'll have a rolling chassis in a month or two.
70/71 torino 429 mounts should work to put that 429 in that 68/69 since the under hood area looks the same if you have not got the mounts figured out.
Getting a little bit done. I ended up having to sandblast the frame rails. I didn't count on the ridiculously high evaporation rate of EvapoRust. In 3 days I had lost 4gal. It is great if you can dip the part, otherwise it's a pass. The frame is mocked, I need to square it up, waiting on hardware from McMaster Carr. I'm cramped for space bad right now, motors, wheels and misc parts everywhere. I'm trying to get a sea container delivered this week so I have non-garage storage.
I'm only working 3 days a week now so I'm trying to make good use of it, getting as much done as possible. Frame boxed, top seams welded and ground. Next I'll flip it over and weld and grind the bottom seams. In the last 2 weeks lots of parts have showed up, 4" drop axle, 2" drop front spring, 4 bar front end, front disc brakes. After the boxing is done I'm going to flatten the rear crossmember and get the rear end hung. I still need a ladder bar set up for the rear, probably going to go with the Millworks set up. And my cargo container should be here next week so I can finally get extra parts out of the garage so I won't have to step through the frame to get across the garage.
Some wrong parts and a change of plans later and I almost have a roller. I decided to go with TCI parallel leaf springs instead of the transverse out back. If I want to change the rear end, I don't want it to be a major project. I think next step is bring my engine home and see if I can set it back far enough to use the front sump pan.
Well it's 3/4 of a roller since FedEx can't get a wheel from Nevada to Ohio in less than 8 fucking days. With that accomplished I decided to get the body out of the detached garage and onto the frame. 4 years in an uncontrolled climate didn't do it any good. I think the next step will be brace the body so I can cut the floor out and get it channeled, then pressure wash and wash with OA.
Still waiting for a Fedx shipment from April! Reordered in May and still no show. Glad you are making progress. The body looks great to me.
Hard to believe this is the same car you started with... The rescue work on the body is inspiring and the chop is brilliant! When you get done, my buddy has a nice burned '51 Merc you could do! (Ha-ha!)
It took every blade for every cutting tool I own but it's finally channelled. The body is sitting on a brace tacked to the bottom of the frame so I can fab new mounts. I also swapped out the slicks for narrower tires that fit in the fender. Eventually the front tires will go on back and smaller fronts will be mounted.
