Been awhile since I've posted but have finally started working in the 54 customline again. Currently putting front end back together. Could someone tell me if core support springs go on top of front crossmember or below, currently have them on top but doesn't look right as rubber pad is not against crossmember Thank you.
Maybe this is a better pic, radiator core support springs, thinking maybe springs go underneath front crossmember since rubber pads is not resting on crossmember, maybe somebody could take a look at theirs to see , thank you
The springs on my '55 are below the support member. My car had been re-done when I got it, so I can't vouch for originality.
Thank you 40cpe , hope somebody with a 54 will chime in to confirm radiator core support springs go below crossmember, thanks again!
If you had this it should show up in the Illustrations Section https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum...lock-engine-manual-and-other-goodies.1005974/ Best investment you can spend on your project guys if you are a newbie get one Dan has the best deal!
Just thinking outloud here.....your comment about thinking it wasn't correct because the rubber pad wasn't touching......my thoughts are if it was touching, there would be no purpose for the springs. Think of it like your front suspension..coil springs, but you've got rubber bumpers/stops you hope never touch. I've got Dan's manual/thumb drive somewhere.....after moving, it seems like a lot of stuff I have may never be seen again.
Humm, good point Texas57, thank you, hoping somebody with a original 54 will take a peak under front crossmember to solve mystery ,thanks again
That main view of the diagram is '57...........doesn't look like it's going to answer 62ute's question. I know it says "typical", but it's obviously not what the '54s have
Thanks, that's what I thought. When I get home from work I'll upload the pic of the 49-53 which is what I have and it hopefully will give the right image and a better idea of what you need.
Ya, diagram is different than my 54, I was thinking that it would be cool if we had front end schematics in our sticky thread to refer to, there are a lot of parts on the front end of these cars. the sticky thread has been an awesome resource ,I want to thank those who contributed and put it together
When i re-installed the original 6 cyl radiator, i sat the core support on the rubber piece and then ran the two bolts through the holes on either side. Then put the springs on before the nuts underneath. That will allow the core support to rock left/right if the body shifts (i hope). That is pretty similar to my Model A mounting. I couldnt get under to get a pic. As you said, the pic in the manual is not the same...Hope that helps
This is what the manual shows for the 53, but I'm quite sure its the 54 mount since its what I bought for mine and the upper hose placement makes sense because only one for the Y block instead of two for the flathead.
Thanks 54Hotrod and Shortshift, I finally found the old rubber pad that was under the core support and it was smashed flat like it had weight on it for some time, I'm convinced after seeing that and the input for u guys I'm going to move springs below crossmember , thank you everyone for your help!
