Another way to diagnose 180 out , when your coming around to tdc the number five valves are closed. if either are open your 180 out.
Yes to checking if the valves are closed with the cover off- also to a answer your question about firing order with a vortec head roller cam small block- the standard Chev firing order as indicated earlier will work fine.
Thank you..the truck is running great.. Also i think my tires are out of round..i bought them years ago used and i think thats why they sold cheap... Next is to check the transmission to make sure is shifting correctly
The truck ran great that day but after sitting for a couple of days,i tried starting it and it didnt. I noticed gas leaking around the base of the craigslist holley carb. I also noticed that fuel was low in the tank. I havent a working fuel gauge. I took the carb off,put the original(the one i bought new 8 years ago) filled the tank with gas,took the spark plugs out and noticed that they were wet... Cleaned them up,reinstalld them. Truck started and idled and didnt leak... Sat for a couple of days...tried to start it and it didnt.. Flooded again. Today i reinstalled the craigslist carb after i tightened the body screws that were loose.. The truck was hard to start but it ran for a few seconds... Took plugs out. Flooded. I bought a set of NGK plugs i dont think they work very well... Any ideas of what plugs to buy? Im running a holley carb with new aftermarket HEI electric pump set at 5 psi and double filter. 1 after tank 1 after electric fuel pump.
NGK plugs are just fine. Your carb is flooding the cylinder. Four barrel? You need to check your float position. Some after market floats are too heavy and give improper fuel height. Also check your needle and seat. Here a good video with an easy explanation.
@Petejoe im sorry I missed your post.thank you for the helpfull insight.. I cleaned everything at the begining of this month. Installed new to me "rebuilt carb" from offerup,after i tightened all the screws,cleaned the spark plugs,etc.. The truck started right up and idle real nice... That was 3 weeks ago.. I started today and it started after a couple of tries...mostly cuz of a screwy starter gear.... But the truck started and it ran...started couple more times... I can say the carb/gnition problem is fixed..now i have to play with starter grinding problem, (maybe just a shim) Replace upper seal on steering box,get new driveshaft made...make sure the TV cable is working proplerly,buy new aftermarket temp and oil gauges etc... I decided on wheels. I bought 2 more 16" 1948-56 ford wheels on ebay... and i have 3 sets of 3/4 ford caps for them.. Im waiting for a local business to call me on a wheel i took to them to fix... If they can straighten it,it will cost 100 bux..if they cant,no charge... Im going to try to make it to viva this year.

The pickup uses a small cutout for the 15-16 inch wheel, the cabover had a what 20" wheel & tire. Bob
Oh... I thought about it but they never look right...I gotta get bigger tires and wheels,I'm working towards 17.5 wheels. I have a set with matching hubcaps but the tires are 900 shipped to me...they look nice tho...maybe this winter
Got my driveshaft retubed and balanced with new U-joints. Added side markers like close to what it had originally. Messed with the TV kick down stuff,it's running very well. I need to buy a new steering box I have too much play.. I'm undecided on cab lights...mostly cuz I can barely fit in the garage. Im working on the brake lights...I think I want to change them...and some stuff for the rear... What's everyone doing for chains on the tailgate?
I think the cab lights would change the whole look, in a bad way. I like the smooth looking roof. as far as bed chains I have seen guys use seat belt buckles. just the buckle halves not the belts. "stud" part of buckle welded to the inside of the gate and the buckle welded inside the bed. when the gate swings up they click together. to release push the button and the gate drops. gives the out side a clean look.
and good for you getting all that work done in those cold temperatures you have had to endure. the other day, it was 10 degrees warmer here in ct than Vegas

I vote for no marker lights also. Smooth roof much better look. Early 50’s Chevy tailgate hardware would work or any chain, hook, tab configuration. But it will rattle. 33’s idea really works well.
Thanks guys ... I'm also undecided on mirrors.. I have some square bronco mirrors from the 70s and some 1960 c10 mirrors...also trying to buy some west coast mirrors for it...
Door top mounted( the kind that are level with the vent windows) west coast rectangular mirrors would work. Second choice would be the round ones. Thinking the square mirrors are too modern. Bye the way, I love the truck, always wanted a coe pickup, and you nailed it!
Are those outside or inside bump wheels, what bolt pattern and what width 16". I also might have some old west coast style mirrors.
Don't like aftermarket or stock mirror brackets... Peep mirrors are too small. West coast are too big.. So I'm making my own with 70s c10 mirrors... Homemade brackets...got a few hrs on them...just need paint.. I didn't Wana drill more holes in the door so I reused 2 existing ones Some tubing and flat plate..done.
