Birds are very approachable in New Zealand [probably because 20% of bread sold here is used to feed them]
Go to wildlife parks and wild Ducks, Geese and Swans run for their lives "towards you"

Here's me sitting and enjoying the view with one of the locals at Kaikoura NZ

And me feeding a wild swan from the car window

We all need to give a little back to nature [It makes the world a better place]

  6. In the fall, the sun must be quite right and they can see through my house and think they have a clear path to fly through. I've sat in the house and heard that BONK a few times in a morning alone. Sometimes I look and have found a few dead ones over the years. Most of the time they get up, shake it off and fly away.

Applying some type of sticker on windows helps avoid b collisions...I'm a big-time bird nerd from way back.

  8. I get most of my strikes in the winter when there are large flocks of birds at my feeders. I tried using stickers and blinds which helped but moving the feeders a little further from the house seemed to work the best. It gives them some room to scatter when the hawks dive in. I've also been a bird and nature nut since I was little. My son is a Naturalist/Ranger and does a lot of work with birds of prey.

  13. Yup it's a lot of fun I mostly work with American Kestrels, Red Shouldered Hawks, Red Tailed Hawks and Northern Saw Whet Owls. I run several research programs where we are capturing these birds, taking a bunch of measurements and banding them (leg band with a special number so we can track the bird if recaptured) then they are released where they are captured.

But what about french fries? Drive around our beaches and you'll see seagulls becoming members of the extended family during picnics.

I've been told that bread isn't good for them....luckily white bread is less than 10% of NZ sales.

Every morning when we get up, there are sparrows and starlings lining up on our roof waiting to be fed. A couple of slices of bread crumbled up makes cheap enjoyable pets to have around.

If we don't feed them they raid our grape vine and fruit trees

Here's a photo of chickens ambushing an Orange tree

It's not quite a "Wilson" situation. Our neighbours are now use to our cars. Most Kiwis are quite private [but will keep an eye on your property if you're not home]
Quite often he will leave the keys and wallet in our daily driver overnight with no consequences.
Our garage is only for our toys not our daily driver.
Our property is up a long driveway off the street on a 1/4 acre lot. It is on the Cliff tops of Tauranga Harbour so we get nice views and privacy.
So when he pulls all the cars out for me to clean the garage, nobody on the street sees what is going on.
    Here's the view we get

Right now NZ is in 100% lock down for 4 weeks, so it isn't too much suffering for us [Yet]

  21. I was asked to be a car show judge last summer.
They should've asked if I was biased to any certain car model........

  28. My 3 grandbabygirls were visiting over Spring Break and this one was pestering me in my study/computer room. I let her play with my camera to distract her from touching lots of things that weren't her business.
    She got me........

    And I got her back.......
(I call this photo "Big Trouble" and it only begins to describe the meaning of that. Ha Ha)
Cue the music for "If you see me coming, better step aside......"
