I have some '64 F100 drums I'm going to put on my '30 Ford pickup Hot Rod I'm building. I bought some aftermarket "round" mount spindles that many people use, they fit the Model A axle. The spindle OD size is the same as the stock A spindle. Outers are the same for the '64 spindle I took the drums from as well. The inner bearing OD is 1 3/16" on the Model A and the aftermarket spindle and 1 3/8" on the '64 spindle. Was wondering . .when did Ford make the inner part of the spindle larger . . from 1 3/16" to 1 3/8"?
Is all this because you are trying to find bearings to make it work? If so, one of the major bearing manufacturers has an appendix to their online catalog lists the dimensions for their bearings and races. (ID, OD, height, angle of taper) I can't remember which one now, but years ago I figured out how to put a 240Z hub and rotor on an S-10 spindle. Don't ask, my mind spends as much time going sideways as it does moving forward.
I have the bearing set from Speedway for the aftermarket spindles and F100 drums. I was just wondering when the change took place within Ford.
I started this post with the fact that I have '64 drums. That is what I will be using. I do need to find some backing plates that will work with the 37-48 style spindle. I put the '69 drums on my '64 and now will be putting the '64 drums on the '30
Is there any reason I can't use a '53 car backing plate? I know the cars came 10" and 11" and with 2" brakes as well. The 11" backing plate looks like the truck plate. What is different if I can't use it with the F100 drum?
I believe it is in the drum/hub offsets.. I used 48-52 F1 on square back pass 41-48 spindles with a bearing/seal kit. 11" x 2" Bendix shoes, hardware the same from '48 up to around '64 [there are some shoe width choices in the later years. The '53 car backing plate is 10" [I think 11' started '57] and will not bolt to early spindle.
I was cross referencing parts and such, looking at brakes shoes etc . and see 11" available for those years. It may be a station wagon thing. I have also seen many mistakes in parts listings etc, but maybe the wagons did have 11"?
I had a brain cell light up, went and looked in an EIS catalog! 11" for Pass started in '55, S'wagon started in '52 [!]. '49-54 Pass are 10" '49-51 S'wagon are also 10". Going to have to dig for Part#'s or Hollanders for interchange. Some 11' brakes are actualy 11-1/32 drums dia. I see front drums/shoes up to 3" wide. One year of Lincoln ['54 ?] is 12 x2 but all other years are 11" starting in '49.
I found a pair of F1 backing plates, so I'm good. They work with my 64 drums. I clearanced the spindles for the brake hose and painted everything. Ready to start assembly.
