That's what I thought LB. If they are 600 cfm's that's an awful lot of carb for a 6 cyl. even if it's 300 plus inches.

That's VERY cool, particularly since the class-final sticker,"T", on the windshield suggests that the car competed with some degree of success. Is anyone able to pick up on the event title and/or the date on that sticker?

Reminiscent of the classic quote (slightly edited) from "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,"
"Do you think you used enough carburetion there, Butch?"

If "7646" is an NHRA competitor's permanent number, the picture was taken after 1974, the driver was from Division 7 and I should have seen the car at some point in time. Since I don't think that I would have forgotten it, there must be a disconnect here, somewhere.

    Cool picture, nevertheless!

Scotty T - the only thing cooler than a '57 vette is 2 of 'em!
Your pals' is a '57, right? Chrome headlight trim means something there I think. Cove trim removed, and those pipes! Were the peaks added in place of the bumperettes?
    Nice shot.

Chuck I also think Div. 7 and it looks like a magazine cover photo. I tried enlarging "trophy" sticker to no avail. Just guessing Winternationals 1980 is what it looks like to these tired eyes. Wouldn't it be a M/P car?

The 6 cylinder 1957 Corvette is Larry Olson out of California. He ran as Olson and Mattei in D/MP. I have him running at the 78 Winternationals and somewhere I have a note on it. I seem to remember that it was a 302 ci but I am going on my memory. I thought he won class which may account for the Trophy sticker.

  11. The gold (burnt sugar) car is a 56, I think only early 56’s had painted head light trim. Yes the factory bumperette risors were removed and those peaks added. The tail lights were changed quite a bit also

Thanks, I've been window shopping (hallucinating) for a '57 Corvette.

Guys just a shout out in the hopes of finding some pictures that I can use for the book I am working on. I have pretty much finished the manuscript for the Corvette solid axle drag racing book but now I have the task of finding pictures that I can use. The extent of the pictures may dictate some of the text I ultimately use. I have thousands of pictures in my files which I have found on various sites but would have difficulty using almost all of them. I don't know who took the photo or who owns it for the most part. As you may know, when you publish a book you have to secure permission of the person that owns the rights to the photos (copyright issues). This owner may be the photographer or it may be a person that buys the photo with the copyright that would accompany the sale of the photo. If I even knew whose photos were posted on this and other sites I could attempt to secure the permission from the photographer or owner.

I have secured a half-way decent number of pictures with permission but I am really weak on the early 60s for sure. I have a bunch of Mazmanian photos but not sure which I could ever use. I always could use any photos from the 60s and 70s if they are pretty decent. Some of the ones I have are a bit weak. I also would be interested in anything from the late 50s if you have it. If any of you have any photos that you own or took at various events I would love to be able to talk to you via Private messaging. I have a few photographers that are allowing me the use of a number of their photos and they have only asked for a copy of the book when finished which I find to be more than fair.

Writing this book has been a whole bunch of work but if it pays the tribute deserved to those that raced the solid axle cars then it is worth it. As most of you know, pictures really help tell the story so I am hoping I find enough to do an admirable job.

A 57 with a 6 cylinder. Unusual, but I love it. Certainly not a bellybutton combination.

I agree with that Dave, especially in D/MP which was one of the most competitive classes at that time. Other D/MP Corvettes were running from 287 to 302 cubic inch engines that could pretty much rev to the moon and Olson did pretty well with a six.

Thanks to Jim Dillon, that pretty much nails it down. I ran at Pomona in '78 but I think that was the year that the ground was covered with ice pellets (locals thought it was snow) at one point. I think that we came back for a second weekend and eventually finished it was finished later, after the second weekend. I remember still being in the show on the second weekend but would not have been able to go back mid-week for the finish anyway. School districts don't always have a lot of patience with the schedules of drag racing principals and I'd already missed several days that month just getting that far. Anyway, I completely missed the 6 cylinder Corvette. I'd like to see some more information on that car.

Chuck I will try and update any other info that I have. I thought I may have some other info on the engine but I may be in error. I may have but right now I cannot even find the surface of my desk. I do remember though that he ran without the Mattei name on the side in 1977. He ran strictly as Larry Olson. He ended up adding the Mattei name on the side for 1978 at Pomona, so the magazine picture is most likely 1978. Sadly I do not have any Pomona info for 1980 so he may have continued to run the west coast events.

I remember the photo of the 6-cylinder '57 being on he cover of Popular Hot Rodding back in the late-'70s. When I can get back to my magazine collection in the next few days I will dig out the issue. I'm pretty sure there was a feature on the car inside the issue. If so I'll try and and scan and post. --Steve Coonan

Now that Steve mentioned PHR magazine, I can see the resemblance.

I believe the plate reads "LIVITUP", how appropriate.
