How could you not like that gold/black!

 

I believe what Stan Back wants is to remove the fender lip, entirely, from the body (a-la shoebox Ford) so the fender skirt sits flush with the rest of the fender.

 

Yep, I think that's what he was after! I feel the same way about most mid-'50s-and-later Studes with skirts.

 

That would look fantastic going down the road or pulling into the local cruise-in!

 

The 55 Olds my mom had rear fender skirts that were rectangular in shape. Instead of being full they had a rear facing arch. That arch had a “lip” and you needed to take them off to change a tire. The arch was in the same design as the front wheel opening..

 

Some of you may be following along as @Lloyd's paint and glass is building a custom '57 Chevy 210 wagon. He doesn't have a good '57 grille or blinker bar, so I wanted to suggest a simple custom alternative. Maybe one of you COVID-19 shut-in could throw this '58 grille mesh into this '57 grille opening (sans '57 blinker bar). Much thanks!

Not a photoshop but a real period picture of a similar mod but using a '59 grille, I really like this. Not that '58 or '59 grilles are dirt cheap or anything, but if you had access to one, it'd work.

I think that some of the GM higher series (98, Super Chief, Super) sometimes had flush-mounted skirts in some year of the fifties (how's that for a completely non-committal sentence?). The ones on the subject Olds are not that high. I'd guess if you wanted to clean up the quarter panel (and couldn't find the required skirts for your model, it might be easier to make your own and fit them to a higher, more horizontal line, than to do away with the lip (no easy chore) and fabricate a complex skirt from scratch.

I know, in the case of an extremely lowered car (like my Plymouth), I'd like a higher opening to service tires without having to pull the shocks to gain access. But, I'm lazy.

Stan, back when mom had the Old's super 88 every one had the skirts with arched opening stock I think. Just like 55-56 Ford factory skirts with the rolled lip on the bottom not flat. I have them for mine. After markets always looked better and met the lower body line as I remember.

 

This looks better than I would have thought, and the scale seems dead-on, which is often a problem with photoshop renderings. I could see this also working with several different parking light options, maybe even integrated into the bumper bullets, like a '52 Buick has.

I love this generation of Packards. Those big gorpy grilles are a bugger to clean up and get right, though. I wanted to keep the Packard look and tried multiple approaches. I finally gave up and put the stock grille back in!

 

Italian-esque/Ghia looking sort of facelift. That grille surround is way too clunky for me.
