Features Falcons done right?

If I had any spare coin this one would already be in my garage however as I'd already bought a car that's here now. it's not. It ticks all my boxes! A Mercury Comet is close enough to a Ford Falcon. 427FE etc etc

New years thread bump, and a question.
I have a 63 Falcon with a '66 Mustang 8" axle, albeit currently out of the car and in pieces (flange to flange is 50 13/16"). The existing steel wheels have 4" backspacing and 195/75 R14 tyres. I am tempted by some Cragar SS 14 x 6 rims, but they have a backspacing of 3 3/8" and 175/65 R14 tyres, and I fear they will scrub on the outer wheelarch lip. Any ideas if they'll fit?
Obviously the shallower backspacing will put them further out, but then the narrower tyres (approx 3/8" either side) should help redress the balance somewhat. Would rather not cut the inner arch lip off, if I can help it.

 

Was the axle in the car when you got it, or was it something you found separately? Roundbody Falcons are notorious for being difficult to install a v8 capable rear axle into. You are probably going to have to modify (narrow and move spring pads) the Mustang axle to get it to fit at all. Nothing that is horribly involved, but labor and time nonetheless.

 

It came with the '66 axle already fitted, so I already know it will fit with the 14" 4" backspace steelies.

Does any falcon guys know if the door hinges on a round body is the same through the years? They look similar on the 64. Even mustang hinges look the same and are available through macs. I’m looking for a drivers side 61 upper. Thanks!!

 

You need someone who has a hollander interchange manual to really answer your question. I imagine that they are very similar but I couldn't guarantee it.

 

can't just replace the pins and bushings?

 

8" - '72-'77 Maverick/Comet bolt in with '66 Mustang spring plates, Mav/Com 4dr. driveshaft also bolt in
9" - 1957 Ford

 

Not picking but those donors are more rare than the Falcon now

 

What kind of HP are you throwing at an 8” rear end.

I was backing up the car with the door open and wrecked the door on my wood pile and broke the hinge. I have since welded the hinge back together and found a door but hoping to find another hinge

Don’t know yet...been trying to get it wrapped up..between work and now COVID haven’t done anything to it..last thing that got done was getting the headers on it and plugs in..no easy feat..had to make some tools....gotta get a new fan, a spacer, and a trans cooler, bend all the lines for fuel and trans cooler, mount and hook up gauges, get shifter hooked up, and get u joints on and drive shaft installed..then gotta break it in...Gave Comp my parts list and my desire to have power from 1800-6000 rpm, told them I’d run premium fuel, and they did the cam..really compression is about 10.8:1..but close enough..should be a Snappy little motor..
Basically I used some some of the info below..and Alex knew his stuff..I opted for better heads..and aluminum will allow a little more CR..also have a 3 core aluminum radiator and hi flow aluminum water pump..I’m hopeful for 350 hp...should be a real fun little car..

Yeah that little mod of using the stock wheel arch from a pair of front fenders for the rear wheel arch is the only way to get any rubber under a Falcon... and so subtle compared to a custom (bondo) flare

 

1990-1992 Ford Ranger 8.8. 1/2" wider than stock.

Or, Explorer 8.8, narrowed to use two short-side axles.

Both were made by the hundreds of thousands, and are currently in yards.

 

what's the bolt pattern? seems to me it's the old chevy pattern? or is it the same as 60's

ford 5 lug?

 

Both the Ranger and Explorer are 5-on-4-1/2", same as Ford passenger car, of the US Falcon era.

 

Yeah that's killer. Wonder what front arches he grafted into the rear quarters?

 

I used Falcon front arches. I tightened the radius a bit, and mounted them lower back than the fronts.

 

I have two sets of those I've been holding onto for years. Need me another round body tudor

 

Anybody got a T Bolt hood they wanna part with for a 64-65 Falcon?

 

They are starting to creep up in price. Folks used up all of the Mustangs.

The fuel filler is from an XJ Jag. The cap is not featured in the picture, as that primer was wet there.

This is one step to larger wheels.

The wheel houses in Falcons part company with the quarter panel at the wheel arch. From there, they move inward quite quickly.


That tends to interfere with a wider tire, especially so if lowered.
