Driving down the road this Am and my car started smoking. A white cloud came up from what I though was my tail pipe. I pulled over and Saw that I was leaking trans fluid and rusty water and a a small flame was eating up the oil.

Any suggestions of where I need to start would be much appreciated. I’m thinking torque converter seal?

Orange flame and it was a little shy of coolant but not bad. The oil leak was coming from the tranny. But take a look at the pics no sign of the small fire. Weird.

I'd be way more worried about why there was fire at that point then I would be concerned about where the oil is leaking from.
The only thing in that area that might remotely have a flame source would be the exhaust, and that appears to be in decent condition in that area. Are you sure the rusty water isn't gas? Maybe a rubber or steel line cracked and is spraying gas onto something that would normally get hot. Whatever is burning may be the cause of your oil leak.
The only way i know to find a leak is to start the motor, get under the car and watch for where the leak is coming from, but before you do that, check the condition of your gas lines and hoses. replace any thing on the gas line that looks like it might be questionable before you start it up and look for the oil leak, you may not be so lucky if you have a gas leak that was catching on fire this next time.

Is this car something that has been sitting a while and just recently started, or has it been on the road a while and has had some recent miles put on it? Gene

To check the fluid level. Engine idling, run through the gears pausing a couple of seconds in each one.
Check in neutral- with a cold engine fill to the L mark.
When a car with an auto transmission sets for 20 or so years the oil drains from the seal and upon starting the seal lip is ripped out.
Chrysler recommended a 20,000 mile change interval.

Thanks, Gene. It’s been on the road for about 3 months after sitting for 20 years. I think the fires started from the trans oil leaking on the exhaust.

  12. I've seen some crazy parking brake fires in similar cars.
