Does anyone out there have any info or literature on setting up and installing a "Spaulding Flame thrower" distributor ? They were also sold under the name "Grant" . These were an odd item in that they had two (2) flat caps on each side of the housing, to which the plug wires for that side of the motor were attached . They dont have conventional rotors as we know them, rather a common poletype rotor which is part of the main shaft in the dist.. I kinda think I've figured out how to index it on number 1 fireing, but any help from you guys or copies of original installation instuction sheets would be awsome . Happy New Year!
I have one also and would be curious to gather information on them as well. This roadster has one in it that supposedly has been converted to electronic internals. He's a HAMBer and goes by the handle "THEM" I think. I would like to know the details of his conversion. To do the conversion, I assume that you would need two Pertronix (or similar) units for the cnversion as these are basically two distributors in one case. I have heard that the stock points type set-up in them wears (burns) very quickly and that in order to change them (if you can find a set) requires disassembling most of the distributor. Converting to electronic would solve this problem. I know that this isn't really along the lines of what you were asking, but I figured some good information might come of it. Chris
I converted mine using two 4 cylinder pertronix units. But to answer your questions, I have some copies of the original instuctions I can e-mail, just pm me you address.
They definately look Rad! This one for moper is for sale on eGay I'd be most curious to find out what era these things are from, early 60's?
Here's a couple of pics of one for a small block Chevy, it was an extra I had., it had the two coils mounted on it from Mallory.
Hey guys, I have an old "Hot Rod Ignition" book and I took pictuers of the Spalding pages for you. I'm not sure if you'll be able to read them or not, but if you like what you see, PM me with you email address and I'll send over the full size pictures which are big enough to read. I have/had one on my 32 I just sold. It was a Chevy converted for the Flathead and it was not only cool looking, but ran great!!! These were very very expensive in their time. You could buy a Mallory for $50.00, a W&H DuCoil for $75.00 and a Spalding was around $125.00. Really a cool piece to work on too. Matt
What electronic conversions did you use exactly. I'd like to convert mine over but have no info at all on how to do it. I just have the info for the point stuff
I've got a rotor and all the other parts of anyone is interested , I used the housing for my boat but the guts is up for grabs
i have one for my 283 and another for my y block. the person best able to answer your questions on these distributors is @GMC BUBBA
When I say the title of this thread, not being familiar with the "flamethrower " distributor my first thought was that another immature asshole was looking for ways to shoot flames from his ass end ( tailpipes )
