Hey guys. I know someone mentioned to me in another thread what this is, but I can’t for the life of me find it. Can you guys shed some light on this for me? Is there anything for my 1939 transmission that I could use from it??I’d like to send it down the road if there isn’t. What is a fair asking price for it???
    Thanks

ford big truck 4 speed missing its hogs head. most are crash boxes, but the later synchronized units are saleable. 30's to 50's for a guess. whats the numbers on the case?

Nothing you can use. If it is the later box with 2nd, 3rd, and 4th syncros its worth something to the right person but not a lot. If its the early non syncro crash box worth scrap unless you find a big truck guy who needs a trans. IMO

How much does it weigh without the cardboard box?

I’d have to weigh it. It’s pretty dang heavy.

I’ll have to look for numbers. Where are the located on this type of transmission? I have the hogs head. I was told or read somewhere to keep that for the purpose of adapting a flat head to a t5. At least that’s what I think I remember.

Correct on the hogshead. If you don't plan on using it someone will want it. A while ago I sold one for 100 bucks plus shipping.

  9. They can be helpful as I bought one for my project so i could use the case

It’s definitely a truck 4 speed.....most likely the non synchro type that Ford used from 1932 to 1952. The non synchro type would have “59T-7006” cast into the side of the case. Most people don’t want this unit for a car. We buy the gears if they’re in real good shape.

My dad had an old 3/4 ton international that had a transmission that looked just like that setting in our field for years. I robbed the emergency brake handle off it to make a shifter out of.

  13. 0527251722.jpg I know this post is literally 5 years old almost to the day and I'm bringing back the dead but what on earth is a hogshead?
I am doing research so I could sell 59T-7006 (on the transmission somebody wrote in a white marker 1948 Ford F1) and I came across this post and now I want to know does my transmission have a hogshead does it have any value if it does?
Edit: also how do you tell without taking the transmission apart if it is syncro trans or not, and one other question just in case I can't sell it can the bell housing be changed to the later 8BA/eab/eac style?

The hogshead is the part bolted to the front of the case which has the clutch cross shaft in it. They are often used to adapt other transmissions to a flathead.

The 59T-7006 casting number confirms that this is definitely the non-synchro truck 4 speed spur gear transmission. The removable hogs head adapter is clearly in the photo…..these attach to the gearbox case at the front by six studs with nuts and lock washers. Remove the six nuts and simply tap the adapter off.

If you were local I’d have you bring it by the shop (even without the hogs head) and pay you cash for it….. if the gears were still in good shape. You have to pull the shifter housing to inspect the gears inside. This transmission is too heavy and awkward to ship via UPS. I prefer getting the complete unit as we can generally use all the parts but I’m happy to just get the gears by themselves.
