Yeah...dumb question! I always thought you measured across the face of the wheel. Well, these Summit wheels are supposed to be 14"x6". They measure 15-3/8" across the face. However, they're the exact same size of the 14" wheels on the front of my roadster......which also measure 15-3/8"!
Do you NOT take into account the rim lip?
    What have I missed?!

  2. The wheel size refers to the inside diameter of the tire bead.

With your tape measure at same level as in your photo measure the I.D. of rim (the first step down from O.D.) and tell us what it reads.

  5. Rims always measure "approximately" an inch over size when measuring across the face like that, 14's measure 15, 15's measure 16, 16's measure 17

I haven't heard that one since about 1972 when I was working in a Firestone store when a customer swore that he needed 15 inch tires because he had measured the wheels and the 14 inchers we put on his car were wrong.

Then there is the question not asked : How do you measure the width? Bead to bead.

I don't think even wheel manufacturers measure the same way when it comes to wheel backspacing. On some wheels it seems they must be measuring from the very outer lip of the rim, other wheels it seems they measure from about where the bead of the tire would seat.

And don't even get started on measuring a 5-bolt wheel mounting pattern with a tape measure LOL

Always a source of great confusion to the guys who don't know it.

Wrap a tape measure around the inside shoulder of the rim of your wheel. Take that measurement, should be 47 1/8". Divide by 3.141592653 and you will have a 15" wheel. There will be a test later
