Cool man, I like those Hudsons. If you get burned out on the project and want to sell or trade it let me know. There was a purple one in Colorado Springs that use to running around, havent seen it lately. Yea using a different motor is fun but if you do make sure replacement engine parts are available before you get in too far especially if you plan on driving it a lot. Keep us posted on progress.

Thanx for posting these Hudson's, I felt a little blood surging to the old unit , which doesn't happen much at my age. The se cars are so awesome, Brootal, that custom is sick, and that Racer on the line picture is smokin. I remember going to a stock car race and a Hudson showed up and taught the local boys what is was all bout, just tore up the entire local hot cars. Sweet stuff kids. Love'em! ~sololobo~

    Well where do I start . . .

I used to live in Vacaville CA in the late 80's and would see it on a side street in the old part of town . . . looked like it had been there for years. I took my parents to dinner one night and had to show my dad this old chopped 4-door Merc with a hood scoop (shows you what I knew at the time) and he said "OH MAn that is a Hudson!". I stopped by several times to inquire but no luck.

At the time, I worked for a company that made glass coating equipment, we sold a company in Japan a prototype coater and they kept breaking it . . . long story short, I went there to fix it and found they were in warranty violation so I could not help them . . . their response: They held me hostage for 3 days. It all worked out, and all I got out of all that was a $500 check for my trouble (oh, and my FREEDOM!) and I was on my way home after cashing it, and glanced over at the Hudson, and here is the guy and his wife arguing about it. I offered $500 and he took it. It sat outside until 1993 . . . I moved up north to the country, and stored duck feed in it. When I was layed off, I decided that a good project would be to get some paint on it. The car was real straight, so I went and bought everything to paint it black.

THEN . . . I started the bodywork. Under the ugly flat blue paint was 47 dents (I remember every one of them!) including the drivers door and front fender badly damaged from being made an involuntery suicide door at one point. The entire passenger side was the worst . . . once I got all the paint and bondo off, it looked like the car rolled on it's side and slid in gravel, then rolled on the roof. So I spent months straightening it out and finally painting it. I lived out in the country and shot it in my garage . . . it looked great until I rolled it outside . . . . I missed small door dings here and there . . . so I added the flames and cleared it, only to have dust from the dirt road settle in the clear. I fixed that and threw a small block in it, but didn't do much after that.

I went thru a divorce and lost the car for a while, only to have it returned when the judge found out what I went thru to get it. I could go on and on with stories about it, all the good times etc . . . . but the bottom line is: This Hudson is by far the best car I have ever owned. And the price of gas won't stop me from cruising the tires off!

Sorry to pull this thread outta the grave - but I could use some help.

I have a ‘50 hudson commodore and my flathead 6 finally ate its self . I have a Cadillac 472 and th400 that id like to swap in but can’t find anything about a BBC or the odd bird 472 being swapped in .

does anyone have any info , pics or anyone you might be able to point me to that might have info ?

I called the cad500.com guys and got good info on the engine but they had not had any experience with Or worked with anyone to put a 472 Into a hudson . They were however pretty interested in what they thought sounded like a great idea haha

    Any help is really appreciated

There was a rumor or tale, story, whatever about the Ford 300 six design being actually developed by Hudson. I dunno if there's any truth in it but I think a 300 Ford would be neat in that car. Don't know how well it would fit though.....
Oooops didn't realize I missed most of the thread.....

Haha no prob - I hadn’t heard that before .

I’m really hoping to find someone that has put a BBC or big caddy 472/500 into a stepdown hudson .

By measurement it fits but still would like to get as much info as I can before they carnage begins

  15. havent put one in a hudson, but have in a truck. Building a 500 for my current ride
great engines, I would rather have one than a BBC
first would be the oil pan sump.
most 472/500s have a front sump. I am using a rear sump from a 425. The front wheel drive versions are supposed to have a rear sump
A guy here grafted on a BBC rear sump pan on one a while back.
The oil pump is external, there are a couple different versions. Sometimes they can get in the way
The th400 is great. Hopefully you have room for the long tail shaft those come with.
Steering box clearance would be another issue.
Pull the stock engine and front clip and start building
    thats how its done

I'm working on a 52, and I'm going to go get a Ford 300 six and see about getting it in there. I think the Hudson heritage story on the Ford 6 has maybe been disproved, but I like it anyway.

LOL me thinks that will be your first and last post here, for some reason they dont like the funny looking V8s around here :)

Just picked up this one and not sure what to do with it. Flat 6 runs but I just cant resist upgrading to something newer and overdrive. I must be getting old, I actually feel bad about considering putting in a newer suspension and drivetrain, but I guess I will get over it.

Well I think it is in both camps, hot rod and custom. Mine is a 48 so by definition is a hot rod but a custom hot rod.

  20. 5.3 LS1 engine w/4L60e trans combo using a complete 1980 Camaro front clip.

@drptop70ss Just don't tell us about it here.:)

    Smokey Yunick did.

  22. I think that is a horseshit arbitrary ASRF definition. My pre 1940 project is a custom and that's that.:p

Hudson merged with Nash, then became American Motors, American Motors was bought out by Chrysler in the 80s so thats a bit of a stretch.
Lot of options to keep it "all in the family"

    I think any of the AMC 304, 327, 343, 360, 390, 401 would be great.
Anything under 390 you can pick up good condition engines reasonably as people swap out to larger ones. Finding them is not always easy.

Take a look at the engine bay and see if front or rear sump, steering / header clearance are major obstacles.
" other" GM engines are an option, something like an olds or pontiac 350 are almost giveaway engines if someone is upgrading, everyone looks for the 400 or 455.

Unfortunately I know, I don't post my builds here even though I do tons of low buck fabrication and stuff I think some would be interested. in. Current build is a 55 Buick, cant show anything but this, and maybe that is too much.
