I need to weld on new spring perches. I only have a stick welder but it’s a nice one.
I live in a rural area and the only welding shop capable wants $175.00 an hour plus 3 hr. Minimum.
My question is if I wrap the axel housing with wet towels back from the weld location, a fair amount. Then weld in short bursts what are my chances of not warping the house tubes?
If you have done it your information will be appreciated. If your guessing I appreciate you stating so.
Thank you in advance for your information

What is your skill level with a stick welder?

  6. Are you asking about spring perches (on the frame) or spring pads (on the housing)?

I wouldn't worry about warping the housing. I have welded (both stick and M.IG.) on several rear ends, from changing spring pads to adding bracing for oval track racing.

The key is to skip or move around don't apply all your heat to the same place at once, and let them cool slowly.

Here is how I weld spring pads on a rear weld 1 move 2 then 3 and last 4.
