This one is in a Hot Road Article on Dean Moon

in 1954, Dean produced his first spun-aluminum Moon Disc, an evolution of the smooth wheel covers that streamlined Ak Miller's roadster and the SoCal Speed Shop coupe. This simple, effective design was destined to cement the renamed Moon Equipment Co. as one of hot rodding's iconic brands.

Might have been were the saying 'A Bomb' or Bomber originated...there is a lot of ambience and innovative technology in the war machines that were near being given away after the big one was over...so the parts were cheap and the Hotrod Crowd more adept at many things after gaining skills that could be applied to Postwar Hotrod and it still resonates in the theme of many period builds...

Stogy's ***uming again so salt may be necessary...:D

@39ChevyBob thanks again for sharing these incredible Shots...;)

This shot sure highlights as beautiful and surreal as Bonneville is it's incredibly harsh, nasty and inhospitable...

Yes, I was thinking about that when I saw the shot of the hearty individuals on the non shaded timing stand.
No cases of bottled water... probably water out of a canteen, oh no!

Eddie Miller ran his Pontiac lakester at Bonneville in '50 and '52, so pretty sure that this is '52. Tom Beatty's tank at left, and the Hill & Davis streamliner next to it.
Knott Farington towed all the way from New Orleans with this T-Bird, named "Hel's Angel" after his wife Helen. Ultim
Gary Cagle's Torco/Herbert Cams-sponsored dragster, looks like Bakersfield, at the first Smoker's Fuel and Gas Championship. Gary ran 180 right before the meet, which Art Chrisman won. He later crashed this dragster hard while on tour with it.

George Du Nah, Pasadena Roadster Club member, did a lot of bodywork on this roadster, fitting it with a Cadillac V-8. Here is another shot of it: du nah 2.jpg

May I ask your permission to post some of these photos on the "Pre-'55 Hot Rod" site that Jimmy B and I moderate? I will of course give credit to the Lindsley family---and to you for taking the time to make this contribution to our history?

Sure, David. As before, credit the Lindsley family.

  15. Looks like that is Mel Leighton with Wally Parks. Mel was SCTA treasurer in 1947, he was known for racing sprint cars, had a couple nasty racing accidents in 1940. Postwar I believe he owned cars but had others do the driving. This photo would be from 1947 as that poster looks to be for the 1st Hot Rod Exposition in January 1948.

Thanks, Jimmy! Found this on a Roadrunners historical page when I googled Mel..You are all knowing!
The boys had to wait till April 28, 1946 for racing to begin in earnest under the guidance of its new leaders, President Wally Parks, Vice President Bob Rufi, Secretary Randy Shinn and Treasurer Mel Leighton.

Edit - also found this from our very own Jive-Bomber.. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/?p=27653

Lou Senter's Ansen Automotive Cl*** C modified roadster. Per the AHRF site it was a borrowed car from Ak Miller and driven by Bob Morton who worked for Lou. Ran 142.40 for 8th in cl***, with a 296 cu Merc. Story is Ak told Bob the car was perfect, but Bob found the car was geared wrong, the clutch didn't work and the brakes didn't either! Minor problems...great photo of it here.

Yes - this must be from 1950 - Leroy's car - the winner of the first Sacramento Autorama in the custom cl*** a few months later. And my uncle's #757 roadster in the back ground that he ran that year which Leroy flat towed from Sacramento....think I'll try and post the road trip 8mm footage from that trip on another thread.

Just read up on him, amazing piece of history, even though he was not very successful. Thanks for the info, Mick.
