My 80 year old aunt has been popping off that she wanted to go for a roadster ride. So yesterday we went out for a cruise in the roadster. She had a ball. Don’t forget to take care of your elders!
Good man Root, I have done that in the past but now I'm the oldest member of the family, you did good my friend. HRP
I took for a short ride since the wind was beating her up pretty bad. She wanted another ride! So I took her to dinner.
Good Job Buddy ! Anytime any of us can spread some happiness to a senior or anyone is a good thing. Another pearl of wisdom from my Mom, " Remember to be nice to old people, one day you're going to be old " It's happened to me, How did this happen so fast ? Another pearl from Mom " Everyday the clock runs faster, the older you get, the faster it goes ! " Dang ! It's True.
My 80 something neighbor across the road told me she and her husband had a 53 Chevy. Her family didn't do much with her, so I took her for a ride and to breakfast on her birthday. She was trilled! She was hard of hearing I didn't bother her a bit when I stood on it, Straight piped 261 exhaust exits just behind the door.
My Mom’s 90, she’s been out riding in my roadster and I took her to lunch several times in my ‘56 Chevy (she really likes that) before the virus hit. Years ago she even went for a ride on my ‘37 knucklehead chopper. My folks have always been interested in and supportive of my mechanical addiction. Lucky me. A month ago our town had a cruise night and one of my best friends in laws asked him a favor, could he pull out their 63 impala SS and take them to cruise night. They are in their 70's and neither him or her have the strength to work the clutch for the 4 speed. Johnny my buddy said of course. He takes the car, washes it, checks all the fluids and takes them to cruise night. They had a blast. 2 weeks later one of them have a stroke, again they ask johnny to take them to the next cruise night as it will be their last in their car as they are putting up their impala SS to help pay medical bills. So just remember that 1 small act of kindness may mean more than you will realize at the time....
Twenty five years ago my 21 year old son took my 75 year old dad for a ride in my coupster before I took it apart to make "a few small" changes/improvements. It won't happen again because dad is now in ho****e.
our model T club used to go to a nursing home here and take the old folks who wanted, out for rides. many others just sat and enjoyed the show. all were happy, including us drivers. try it...you'll like it!
My neighbor turned 99 a month ago! Neighborhood and then some did a drive by and one of the guys borrowed a Fire Truck for some added amu*****t..Just tickled her, still talking about it!
Your post reminded me of my Grandmother! Back in about 1976 or so, she was visiting my Dad and I showed up on my motorcycle. She was in her middle eighties and stated she had never rode a motorcycle! Well.... climb on Grandma! I took her for a ride, she loved it! That kinda of spirit propelled her to live to be over a hundred years old! Thanks for reminding me of that memory! Bones
Well done Root! My grandma (98) loves to ride in my 55 Chevy, because she can easily get in and out . She always tells my mom she wants me to pick her up in the 55 ,not her or my dad in that newfangled SUV she can´t get in and see out of, hahahaha Mom and granny riding shotgun!
Tried to find a picture but......well I didn't, but in 1966 while on leave from the Army I took my grandmother for a ride on my "piece of ****" 1955 Royal Enfield 500 CC thumper. I thought she was pretty old and brave to ride with me in the winter in Iowa She was up for about anything, wish I would have appreciated her more I've come to the conclusion that she wasn't that old, I was still riding motorcycles into my 70's. Well a month or so ago I took my 85 year old father in law for a ride in my 53 Stude. My wife told me later as Max and I drove down the drive that her mom said that riding in that car just made his day I've taken him in my 38 coupe and he feels the same way then. Max is a car guy, he put a McCulloch blower on a 53 flat motor, then when he bought a new 57 Ford he put the blower on it (a 312 four barrel, stick and OD). I wonder who will take me for a ride when I get old?
I bought my current ride because my father has Parkinsons and is getting worse faster. He has always been a wood boat guy, both of us have, but he can no longer get into his boat without a great deal of effort by me and a few helpers. I've gotten him into his beloved Chris Craft a few times this summer, but the hot rod he can jump right in on his own still, so we cruise for burgers and a beer at least once a week, and I swear it's improved his condition mentally, and physically. When he sees me pull in his driveway, suddenly it's like he's in better shape, and he gets the walker out to the car somehow.... He taught me everything I know. I love the old ****....
This is way off topic, but get your dad involved in boxing for Parkinsons. I have a close friend with it and it has slowed his symptoms. EDIT**I just saw his shirt, so I guess you know this already. Good for you, enjoying time with your dad is something you will always cherish.
Yes, awesome call. Funny you saw the shirt! Lol. He boxed as long as he could, but he's no longer able. He still keeps on touch with his fellow boxers though. And I know he misses his instructor, she had an incredible rack! Thanks for the kind words.
Good on you ! My aunt would have been the same way - when I told her I was trading her O/T collector car she gave given me for a 1940 Ford sedan....she said great ! She had grown up in Cali with cars and my uncle's hot rods before moving to Texas in 1961.
Back in 1976 I had just bought a 73 Buick Gran Sport with 16K on it. My Grandma saw I was driving some thing different and asked what it was. I told her what it was and said lets take a ride. She got in and I took off enough to put her back in the seat a little bit. She told me she never remembered me having a car didn't have loud mufflers before. She said" What's the matter, you getting old" She was 85, I was 25 Damn I miss my Grandma!!
So, I just got back from Sunday dinner with the family at the family farm. It was my aunt’s 82 birthday. This is the same lady that I took for a ride in the roadster. She was eyeing the 35 and so I asked her if she wanted to go fit a ride in it as well. Well, of course she did. So away we went.....
It was kinda funny. I asked and she said “Oh I can ride in it some other time”. I said “ I have time. “. Well, OK, let’s go!
