Agreed, I have a 5.9 ***mins for my Dodge as it is going to be a hauler. It will be a 1 ton, dual wheels etc set up to pull my 24ft trailer.

If you are going to make a 1/2 ton equivalent that you don't plan to pull a trailer often, I'd lean towards the 5.3 LS as it is a good package and great driver material. To be a little different, I might look for a 4BT/3.9L ***mins as it could get better mpg than the 5.3. It will be more expensive though as they are bringing the same or higher prices than the 6BT/5.9L. It would also need to be bumped up a little as the stock governor and hp is tough to drive if used to a gas v8.

Packaging is a concern, the ***mins engines are tall. Deep pan and just a tall engine. The 6cyl is long too. And you'd think they'd be narrower than a V8, but they aren't. Too much stuff hanging off them. It is also heavy.

An LS is very easy to place in a tight spot, intake can go on backwards if needed, no distributor to make room for, can be found with aluminum blocks if needing a lighter engine. Tons of aftermarket intake and exhaust manifolds of all kinds if you need them. Tons of different oil pans too, flat, rear, and front sump.
