Technical Straight SBC Thermostat Housing

Did the small block chevy ever come with a straight thermostat housing , I have a modern billet looking Mr Gasket one but it doesn't suit my 60's era build (32 5w with 327) would like to replace it with something OEM or just generally something more in keeping .

I don't have experience with that one but a lot of those shiny chrome water necks have a real problem with leaking.

Ive had the same issue with the one I have currently, ended up taking the o ring out and running a traditional gasket . Also the quality of the chrome is shocking

 

If you can find an original iron one, the warp problem is not as bad, but you will probably have to file the gasket surface.

 

Look for a thermostat housing for a stock ‘57 Chevy 283 application.

1957 Pontiac is the one you want, stay away from that chrome garbage. It points straight up, if that is what you meant.

 

i'm doing a 283 stock GM intake it had the one that pointed forward i needed one the pointed straight up for a 32 radiator. what i used was a stock thermostat housing off a late 60's to early 80's big block mopar same bolt pattern as the small chevy

 

6 cylinder will work. The chrome ones are fine if you rough them up and paint the outside, glyptal the inside and like said above use a stock flat gasket with Permatex #2.

Right around $12 plus shipping...looks to be cast iron, but some now are aluminum. As Jimmy Six said, a 235" Chevy 6 thermostat housing will work, too. I'll send you an email as well. Bob

 

I think at one time I used a 318 Mopar one that was straight up on a Chevy.

 

I used on from GMC V6 that was straight & aluminum.

 

straight up? or angled straight forward? As mentioned, the 6 cyl ones will work, the 55-62 235 housing goes straight up, the 55-mid 60s V8 housings angle straight forward.

 

This is a cast iron GM housing that points almost straight up. It's about 5 degrees forward. At one point I did have some straight up ones and they did not have the access port. So yes, they are out there.

 

Real parts stores can get you cast iron ones. But it takes a book. Alsorts of them in "the book"

The only markings are on the driver's side. Marked 6122 down near the mounting bolt and 11 up on the neck where the hose would cover.

 

That’s one you see at a swap meet for $2 and don’t even haggle. Don’t what it came off of and don’t care because you know your going to need it one day.
For me I can’t p*** an old Chevrolet/GMC throw out bearing fork. Must have 10-15. Bought them sometimes just for the spring clip since there were no repops.. now I’m done with all that since we have 2 running cars.... I gotta get to a swap meet and thin out my stash..

Try 57 -58 vintage 235 Chevy [bolts onto a Smallblock]

 

And if I recall correctly, been incorrect once or twice.. Dodge will fit also..

Four Seasons part # 84908
shows it fits 86-73 GM Lt.trucks
84992 goes straight up also without the threaded port.

 

I'm digging into this a bit right now. Old intake had the bolts at roughly 2 and 8 if straight ahead is 12.
New(er) intake has bolts at 3 and 9. Old housing won't work with old hose. So looked at a few years of Rock auto and found these. It might help someone.
Used Bel Air to check, but also looked at Truck.Brand is Four Seasons, didn't find an illustrated catalog.

If there is a member here who can offer more old school choices, fire away.
I would rather not clog this up with billet adjustable and knock off Chrome.

The top one looks very similar to mid 60s L79 327 .

 

This was all quick spot checking. I didn't look at each YMM.
That could be, but it seems like they did different ones depending more on body/radiator than engine differences.
That catalog would be a big help here for application as well as pictures.

I had a straight up cast iron mopar neck on my sbc

 

As above, Chrysler housing on a SBC (Fits 250's as well).
