On August 10th a Derecho wind storm came through Eastern Iowa with winds clocked between 100 and 140 mph. We had an oak tree fall on our 4-stall garage where I keep the 1936 Ford Cabriolet, a 1948 Austin A40 parts car, a 1963 Falcon sedan and a 1966 Sunbeam Tiger. The garage roof shifted and moved but luckily it held. But two large oak limbs pierced the garage roof and missed both the Falcon and the Tiger by about a foot. After going without electricity for 12 days and nonstop chain sawing since the storm, I was finally able to relax this weekend. I decided to take the 36 and get some photos next to the trees that came down next to my mom’s house.
that give me the creeps looking at that tree over that beautiful car. glad it made it through the storm.
The clean up is going to take a long time. There are tree debris piles along almost every street in town. They estimated that the city lost 50% of its tree canopy.
Bad thing about those derecho storms is they blow up without any advance warning, then proceed to move so fast about all you can do is take cover and hope for the best. We had one come through here a few years ago, first time I had ever heard of them. We got lucky, lots of wind, but little damage. Good to hear you made out well. Between that storm and the hurricane that just blew through LA and AR, there will be lots of clean up for sure. Good luck to all....
They didn't all make it. I don't know this fella, but he's near you. One vintage car in my family got hit too.
I am kinda stumped...I live on the west coast but have never heard the term Derecho storm until very recently . Is it a new type of storm?
Lived thru a tornado when we first moved to Tenn., saw the pictures on the news and worked for months on the clean up. The devastation is real and the force of nature is unforgiving. You came thru it, but you know what it's like to be kind of helpless and pray for all things around you. Someone must have build a pretty stout garage to withstand this storm, be Thankful for that.

A bad one (derecho) come through about 8 years ago. We worked for three weeks nonstop just to restore everyone’s power. Longest 16 hour shift I have ever been on. I’m sure the clean up took many more weeks.
My Dad's 55 Ranch Wagon took a tree branch to the rear roof in the storm. Too bad because it was a pretty solid old car. Anyone want to build a custom Ranchero? He'll sell it very reasonably...but ya gotta bring your own chainsaw.
